Why doesn't it fall to second in command? I've heard of this before and never understood the rationale. Is it so they can get their husbands check for a little while? Kinda like paying out on insurance.

Back in the day in a certain Louisiana parish, when the sheriff died the coroner assumed his position. In the 50's this fell to the doctor who lived across the street from us. He was shocked, amazed, and pleased when the election was held.

Maybe that is it, don't know. It is a small county and doesn't have a huge population.

If you read the article, she was appointed by the county court to fill in. Sheriff is an elected position, and in most cases, the office doesn't require an LEO.
