I has found it. Of course I'm talking about using a safety razor. Start by working in a small puddle of hair conditioner (creme rinse?) into beard. Enough to cover well and saturate but don't overdo it. Let that soak in for 3-5 minutes. Rinse off excess and lather as usual. I use Williams shaving soap on a badger brush, but the canned shave gels I tried work fine, too. Use a reasonably new blade. I use Feather, but Dorcos work fine, just not as long. Shave. Since I added the conditioner I have had 0 nicks or cuts, and it shaves super close and smooth.
