Salmonella kills 10 times the number of people in the US each year compared to dogs.

That's kind of a vague standard, "useless" ; it could be applied to most pets if an actual , tangible, verifiable function were involved.....

What dogs, outside of actual working dogs that do an actual job -seeing eye dogs, working herding dogs, police dogs, working huning dogs, etc. - would you consider not "useless" ?

Registering and serializing dogs? That's just stupid.

    Yes, it really captures him.

A friend/neighbor is a very good British Wildlife Artist.
Unknown to me, a couple years ago he painted Badger's picture for me.

He also painted a couple others for me.

This is Bugs (Bunny, who died last year, I sure miss him).
The picture is perfect, down to the long White hairs.

He also gave me this one.

Yeah, you can’t ban/confiscate if they’re not registered and tracked first. I’ll give all posters the benefit of the doubt and assume they’re all being sarcastic rather than just dense.

I'm not aware of any benefit to serial numbers on guns (other than it makes registration and confiscation easy).

When that idiot shot Reagan, they had the gun and proof he did it. The fact they traced the gun from manufacture to him in about a half hour, did noting to solve the case.

    You nailed it.

Serial numbers only serve one purpose. Registration and confiscation. If I shoot someone and drop the weapon at the scene and they trace it to me, that doesn't prove I shot the guy.

All of my dogs have been chipped mostly with the idea of making them findable after run off, loss or theft. The problem here is the registry thinks they should have a subscription fee to maintain the data base. I wonder if it works. Companies keep changing.
Still wouldnt make a bit of difference since all the noer-do-wells wouldnt register any thing anyhow, unless it was stolen.

Uh yea you can. Not having a serial number requirement isn't some magical shelid that prevents the ban/confiscate of guns. If they really want your guns, they will walz into every house in America and get them. Serial number or not

I was looking at it from the legal side. As in evidence in a crime or in the courtroom. Stuff like that. They do help close cases and help the prosecution win. Or possibly even prove an innocence. How much of a nightmare would police work evidence be without serial numbers. That's kind of what I was getting at.

And what important amendment, pray tell, requires serial numbers on firearms?

Many 22 rifles and shotguns were manufactured and sold at retail without serial numbers. Possibly other firearms as well, but those are what I sometimes see on GunBroker.

At best serial numbers on guns are useful in tying them to crimes only until the chain of custody from manufacturer to final owner is broken. And that is broken by activities legal or illegal.
