Just saw this post. No worries about disagreeing with me as that is what this site is here for. We are in agreement that it is an absolute shame that legally the rifle needs to be destroyed. I don't like the idea of any firearm being destroyed, much less one that is as old and with as much history as that one likely has. Unfortunately though, that is the law of the land whether we like it or not.

Despite the age and sentimental value, I am sure you can agree that keeping it is far from worth the possible loss of freedom if BATFE were to somehow find out that it was in someones possession.

Our little disagreement is no excuse for the disrespect I showed you earlier. I guess I had a bad day and let it get to me, not something I am proud of.

I would like to apologize to you for going off like that. I'm sorry Roger:wavey:

It looks like the OP has two options:
    1. Relinquish ownership of owning an illegal firearm by destroying it (regardless of sentimental value).
    2. Buy a new receiver (as OP mentioned) and install it once rifle is inherited.
    Problem solved.

I never understood why someone would remove a serial number. Cop sees a serial number is removed, automatic felon. Sees a serial number does not know.

The numbers look almost readable. A trick I used in crossectional weld inspection may work for you. Polish the area with the seaial number removing as little metal as possible, but removing all scratches. Soak the section in Easy-Off Oven Cleaner. It will etch the metal showing the different densitys and perhaps show the full number. Then over stamp it with the correct number.

If you are going to toss it, it would not hurt to try.

Update on this: My grandpa has removed the barrel from the receiver and will be sending everything, minus the receiver to Fulton Armory. They will install a new receiver, headspace everything, and send it back for about $380. Not too bad considering the rifle didn't cost my grandpa anything.

I'll give you $400 for it when it's done.

You know, I thought about selling all of the parts (minus the receiver) and using that money towards buying another rifle.

I would guess that buying a new rifle, minus the cost of the parts sold would be more than $380.
