I just ran the "Shields Up" from Gibson research. According to that program, my machine achieved a perfect score as regards file sharing, common ports and all service ports. Does this mean I am safe from probes or should I go ahead and purchase a router. Would this be overkill?

Mac's are fairly secure by default. I don't know what type of internet connection you have but some people claim it's difficult to get full speed internet access with a Mac and certain ISP's. I think a router might help this problem. It's been a while since I've bought a roiuter. They used to be fairly expensive but I think they are cheaper these days.I don't use wireless but I still use the same old router I bought years ago.

I'm running Comcast high-speed (sometimes) internet. They seem to reduce strength after midnight.
