Couldn’t governors call up their state’s National Guard for this without Sec Def authorization?

Probably so, and that's a big line to cross, but this almost seems like the federal government is giving its blessing to do so. Scary stuff.

Big line to cross? States activate guard members all the time to respond to emergencies.

Sure, for humanitarian missions. Rarely for something like this though. This will be like Hurricane Katrina without the hurricane.

Mostly because “something like this” hasn’t happened in our lifetimes.

This is a humanitarian mission, not much different than responding to a hurricane or other disaster and enforcing an evacuation or get out order. Which the guard does all the time.....

How is using armed troops to forceably imprison American citizens against their will a humanitarian mission?

When the NG is called up by the governor the state has to pay for it.

In this case, the SECDEF is picking up the tab for the coronavirus activation.

The 'Golden Rule' applies. He with the gold makes the rules.

Responding to a pandemic to help preserve order, and deliver supplies, administer aid, perform any of the other services we’re currently doing are all humanitarian services.

Uh, there may be one or two states where that is happening but by and large, states activating their troops are paying for it out of their budget.

I would love some title 10 orders out of this, because it means a significant pay raise, but I’ve not seen that anywhere (yet).

That's just not the same at all. You conveniently call using armed troops to imprison people against their will as "perform other services". That's silly

I’m sorry you don’t like the truth.

However, reality doesn’t care what you like. Feel free to be offended.

How many states actually have literal stay-at-home orders? Our EO and others I've looked at have exemptions for most of the stuff I'd be going out to do anyway.

And business closures are controlling things from the other end.

When you see the helicopters start dropping troops in from the sky, that is NOT a humanitarian episode happening. Until that happens, i`m not sweating it. We`ll ALL hear them coming. My state will likely be the first where it will happen. NY ya know... run by the communist party.

I dont want to start a fear & panic situation here, but keep this in mind... we`ve never been through anything like this in our lifetime. It would not surprise me a bit if the govt tries something that stupid.

So what is your recommendation to enforce necessary stay-at-home "suggestions" ?

We're seeing lots of abuses of power right now. You have mayors and Governors asking to call the police on neighbors if they leave the house or if they see non-essential businesses open.

It's not the same and you know it, and there are multiple violations of the Constitution currently going on that will be settled after this is all over.

My recommendation is that you don't and the government is abusing it's power.

Some are okay with transferring extreme powers to a small handful in the government and saying the hell with Bill of Rights and constitution because they are scared. With freedom comes person responsible and consequences. The sick and elderly have always been at greater risk of death for these type of things. It should be their responsibility and choice to stay at home, wear mask, wash their hands, and social distance themselves, and not mine.

He's correct...constitutionally, legally and historically. The National Guard isn't the US Army unless it Federalized... The Governor of the States can use their Guard forces for any type of action he needs them for...legally! Put down riots? All the time.. Stop looter...all the time... Enforce desegregation policies in local schools...happened everywhere and it was legal.
