I tried to use the search feature and it's been disabled.

I don't know if this was intential or not. If not, this is a heads up that it's not working.

    Thanks. :)

I remember this happening at least once before, I believe Eric was working on the site at the time (compacting databases, etc) and had purposefully disabled the search function.

Or, it could be something else entirely.

Hopefully it's a temporary thing either way.

Yeah, I remember that as well. I hope it's that he's working on the site and nothing serious. He did say he was going to be working on the membership tier.

    ;c :)

Hi folks. The repeated database failures in recent weeks were largely caused by the use of the search function, at least peripherally. The database has gotten so large that the amount of data a search has to chew through has become prohibitive and the problem seems to be getting worse. The database crashed more than fifteen times today. With the extra traffic that the election will bring to the site, I decided to disable the search function for now, to keep the site up.

I am going to pull about 2 million old posts off the site and create an archive system for them. This will free up a lot of resources for active discussions and searches. It will be a bit of work to make this happen though.

I am going to rebuild the site's search index table and then turn the search function back on. If the function seems stable, I will leave it on. If the crashes keep occurring, I will have to disable the feature until the archive system goes into affect. The search index rebuild will take at least a full day. I'll post more when I know more. Eric

What we need in the interim, is volunteers to memorize sections of GT and be available for questions.

It may not be the most up to date way to search the forum, but if you go to google, you can search this, or any other website using their search engine. ie: I was looking for some info on Night Sights, for my G23, so I just typed in (minus the quotes) "night sights site:glocktalk.com". Maybe that'll help some people that would like to do searches??
