search has been disabled?
Yes, the search function is disabled for now. When I have to restore the database, the searchindex table that the search function utilizes does not get restored. It would take way to long to back up and restore all of that data. I will now have to run a program that will rebuild the searchindex and this will take a day or two to complete. Once this operation is done and provided that it appears that the backup database can handle the load, I will turn the search function back on. Sorry for the disruption. Eric
yeah, I always thought that would have to be a HUGE quantity of data.
the program that rebuilds the searchindex table, is it a part of MySQL, or is it a specialized recovery program?
I guess I'm trying to ask, what program is it?
The search indexing program is a stock function of the vBulletin software I use. The program crawls every post on the site and indexes every letter group larger than two letters. It takes a while to run, but it uses less resources than trying to restore the old searchindex table and the site can be up while it runs. When it is done, the serachindex table will about the same size as the rest of the database combined. It is a LOT of data. Due to the fact that it can be reconstituted, I never back up the searchindex table. Eric
With the little I know about this sort of stuff, I can only imagine how long it will take.
As of this post, the GT front page shows there are just under 2,000,000 posts. DAMN! That's alot of three+ letter combinations to catalog!
;P ;P ;P ;P ;P
Keep up the good work Eric and thanks for everything.
Same here. Thank you for your time and hard work to keep us sorry 'uns happy!
What is the dbase for vBulletin? Is it sqlserver? Just curious. How's it going on the Search Function?
Thanks, Eric. I'm looking forward to the search function coming back online.
vBulletin is a powerful, scalable and fully customizable forums package for your web site. It has been written using the Web's quickest-growing scripting language; PHP, and is complimented with a highly efficient and ultra fast back-end database engine built using MySQL.
that's why i try to keep my posts under 3 letters with a "+1" in the subject.;f
How's it going? We really miss being able to search for new posts.
I miss it also.
I use it almost everyday.
Thank you SOOOOO 4 all you do eric.....with that said, any word on the Search's future? trying to located a member Im having some difficulty with on a deal and the search function would help me quite a bit to know if they have been online since havent been able to make contact Thank again!!!!!

Guys, I am working on it as fast as I can. The current database server cannot handle much of a load and I am pushing it as hard as I dare. I will let you all know when I am done. Eric
