Okay so I have a Marlin model 790 .22LR semi-auto rifle that I use for varmit and competitive shooting. This weekend has shown that my eye just isn't as good as it was and I am having a hard time with the open sights now. I can still hit what I aim at most of the time... it's just harder. SO, I am shopping for a scope for my rifle.

I will post a photo of the rifle later... anyhow these are the options I have come up with. If you have a suggestion, well that's why I am creating this post! Keep in mind I want to keep the price below $60.00 for several reasons.

    Choice #1
    http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/...-ar15-m16-rifle-scope-by-barska.aspx?a=322930

Choice #2 - Thinking about it this might be over kill...
    http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/...50-mm-ir-rifle-scope-with-rings.aspx?a=602051

    Choice #3
    http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/3-9x26-mm-tactical-scope.aspx?a=405041

Other things to keep in mind. When I am hunting ground squirrels I need the extra magnification to actually see the little beggars against the ground, they blend it pretty damn good. I do shoot beyond 100 yard at small game as well, generally I will use the hottest round I can find, either CCI Stinger or an equivalent, which seems to be the Armscor HP, although it is a bit slower and has slightly less energy it is just as reliable and accurate as the CCI Stinger has proven itself to be.

Many years ago, I read an article about scoping a .22 rifle. The author claimed that the best set-up came with more money spent on the scope.
He claimed you would do better with a cheap gun and expensive scope than the other way around.

I disagree, I have a $90.00 scope on my .270Win and it's been dead on accurate and very reliable under a wide array of lighting conditions. My personal experiences in life have shown that expensive does not always equal better. Take the scope on James Model 60 Marlin (Ref Link: https://glocktalk.com/forums/showthread.php?p=16297141&posted=1#post16297141) $40.00 scope, it gets the snot beat out of it and still holds it's accuracy as well as provides a nice FOV. He was taking head shots on squirrels at 75+ yards.

Anyhow, I am on a budget (who isn't?) and this is a luxury purchase that I have not planned for. So I want to keep it below $60.00. I have most of my $$ allocated to purchasing silver and .22LR ammo due to the upcoming restrictions in California. Since I reload I will still be able to get components for the 10MM but the .22LR I will be restricted to 50 rounds per month and have to show id and be thumb printed. Since I refuse to be tracked and I disagree with this moronic law, I am stocking up ahead of time with as much .22LR ammo as I can get. Kind of like the whole airport security. I no longer fly because I will not subject myself to unconstitutional search and seizure.

Maybe if I was shooting at international levels of competition I would consider more expensive scopes, but then I would also be using a match grade rifle custom fitted to me as well.

50 rounds a month. That's crazy. What if you're a competition shooter? Do you just have to move?

And to keep on topic...I have a Nikon prostaff 3-9 on my 10-22. Great set up. Got the scope for $90 at walmart. It was just sitting in the ammo case marked down.

I actually have that first scope on my .22 and I quite like it. I have a hard time seeing through a lot of scopes, but it works quite well for me.

ETA: I got it from Sportsman's Guide and it was a special sale for $20.

I have the second scope on my Marlin 795. I love it, worth every penny and I can consistently headshot squirrels at 75+ yards

I have a budget .22 rifle- a Savage MkII Mako (about $300) that wears a Bushnell (under $100) riflescope. With CCI Standard it will shoot ragged 3 shot groups at 100 meters with my sorry excuse for a marksman.

Doesn't matter, I do shoot competition with my gun club but we are still limited to 50 rounds. AB962 really screws a lot of things up for law abiding citizens. Why the.22LR is limited is simple, the way the law currently reads is any ammunition that can be used in a handgun, even if it's primary use is a rifle, is subject to a limit of 50 rounds a month, requires a valid id to purchase AND a thumbprint, which means internet sales of ammunition will be killed to this state.

So California's liberal legislature essentially cut its own fiscal throat a little deeper. The real irony of the whole deal is that the people just don't understand how screwed they are. There is a lot of money in ammo and California just killed another source of income. Morons, really I am surrounded by morons with small pockets of intelligence.

As for moving... I am looking for a job now outside the Communist Community California. Short of armed insurrection, there is no fixing California. Our recent elections just proved that.:faint:

Spend what you can. I love looking through nice glass. I'm sure any of those (maybe not the $20 tasco) will hold up fine for a few years.

Here is the Marlin I will be mounting on...

It's a composite photo, the stock is after market and I like it for the most part, although I am going to bolster the cheek piece a bit. But the pistol type grip makes it easier to get a straight shot off while standing on a hill.
