Registered my kids for high school this morning. I actually read the weapon policy in order to remind my daughter they won't like it when she leaves a case of 9 Ammo in her back seat. Long story... Haha.

In reading it they actually ban pencils from school.

    Also common butter knifes.

I pointed it to a few people and they laughed one teacher said please bring pencils to class. They will get a supply list and it will probably says pencils. Each classroom had a pencil / weapon sharpener. What the....

Will email the school board to confirm. Like most places it is zero tolerance so might as well expel half the students I guess.

Well, for the sake of sanity, a pencil certainly makes a better weapon than nail clippers.

Sent this to the school board.

I registered my 3 kids at Bayside this morning and in reading the
weapons policy I noticed pencils are banned as weapons. Can you
confirm this is the case. It seemed pretty clear in the policy that
pencils are banned. Numerous classes had pencil sharpeners in the
room. I try and teach my kids to follow policies and rules so just
checking as I expect to get a supply list for the teachers and likely
to include pencils. My son is in art class so trying to figure what is
    up with the policy.

I'd go with the uber-tactical assault pen. Get the one with the "clip."

My kids bring their knives, bows, arrows, and firearms to school...

Because the homeschool rules require it.

Excellent point. I would also be wary of pencil erasers attached at the end and tacticool writing grips toward the top of the pencil.

Yep. And this is what school boards, principals, and teachers have to deal with. People making reactionary assumptions and not reading the entire document or taking a piece of it out of context. And we wonder why our reading comprehension scores are so low, when we have reading comprehension issues among the adults.

Lets actually take a look at the wording and try to "read between the lines." I will highlight the important parts of the passage... lets read along!

Brevard School Board Policy 5772 Weapons:

The Board prohibits students from possessing, storing, making, carrying, concealing in a locker or vehicle, or using a weapon or other
devices designed to inflict serious bodily harm in any setting that is under the control and supervision of the District for the purpose of
school activities approved and authorized by the District including, but not limited to, property leased, owned, or contracted for by the
District, a school-sponsored event, in a District vehicle, or in school-sponsored transportation, without the written authorization of the
Superintendent. The term "weapon" means any object which, in the manner in which it is used, is intended to be used, or is
represented, is capable of inflicting serious bodily harm or property damage, as well as endangering the health and safety of persons.

Weapons include, but are not limited to: those objects defined in F.S. Chapter 790, firearms, guns of any type whatsoever, including
air and gas-powered guns (whether loaded or unloaded), an antique firearm, a rifle, shotgun, BB gun, pellet gun, facsimile of a
firearm, chemical weapon with a chemical propellant, knives, pocket knife, butter knife, sword, sword cane, dirk, metallic weapons,
ammunition and explosives, shotgun shells, cartridges, or ammunition of a firearm, and common objects found to be weapons (box
cutters, pencils, razor blades, etc.), or any destructive device such as any bomb, grenade, mine, rocket, missile, pipe bomb, explosive
firearm (including a starter gun) which may readily be converted to expel a projectile, the frame or receiver of any such weapon, any
firearm muffler firearm silencer, machine gun, or short-barreled shotgun. This policy shall also encompass such actions as look-alike
items, false fire alarms, bomb threats, or intentional calls to falsely report a dangerous condition.

    -----

There, now we have it. A criminal and school policy charge is more serious and punishable to higher degrees if a weapon is used in any attack. The rule clearly defines pencils as weapons when they are USED as weapons. This allows the district manuverability if they wish to lay it on a kid for abuse with a weapon, etc. Again, the school is completely within it's bounds and I agree with the school.

The school is not banning anything, it's simply defining the term weapon and the possibility that a pencil can be used as a weapon. Don't worry 99.9999 percent of the time it is a tool used correctly.

Would be clearer if instead of

common objects found to be weapons (box
    cutters, pencils, razor blades, etc.),

    It was

common objects when used as weapons (box
    cutters, pencils, razor blades, etc.),

So you can bring razor blades and box cutters to school?
