In a constant state of disbelief,
So I saw two Red Jacket AK's on the rack today and took a look at both. Maybe I am just not the AK consumer that nit picks them apart, cause they didn't look anything more special then the ones next to them, One was duracoated a tan camo and the other was plain.

Over all I was left really unimpressed. Why are they worth $1299, and $1399? My Yugo M70 that I have done up my self is more impressive to me, maybe because i put the time in it.

I added a comp, para cord wrapped the stock, changed out the sights to a tritium front and a RPK rear. Thing shoots exactly where I want it to, i'd deer hunt with it in heartbeat. $429 + 100 or so, so call it under $600.

What would I get with a Red Jacket AK for double the money?

Red Jacket seems to be more about the name stamped on the firearm than about the firearm itself. Do they do cool stuff for the show? Yeah. But everything else, all their "common day" items, just don't seem to be anything special, other than the name.

Nothing about their AK's is really special. They're well-made, and certainly have good fit and finish, but unless you like the name "Red Jacket", its basically the same quality as an Arsenal. So I wouldn't pay more than an Arsenal for one.

No, wait... I'd pay an extra $50 if it was parkerized.

For that much money I will buy a new Slr101s and spend the rest on ammo and mags. If it had to be a custom, I would buy a Krebs.

There is a lot of "special" involved in RD builds. Dee dee dee kind of special.

    Red Jacket:

Cut to size, file to fit, paint to match.....

And then add $1000 to the price for the name.

Did you handle or shoot it, or ? All apple pies and chocolate chip cookies look alike? That's the problem with AKs, they all look alike, until you take it apart or lick it.

People pay a premium to buy a Colt, vs a Rock Island, vs. a Dan Wesson. To me, they look the same in the case. Same goes for a Colt vs. Bushmaster, vs LWRC.

The converted Veprs and Saigas are one hell of a deal!

One biggest problem with the AK's is unlike Glock, M&P or Bushmaster, or Ruger, or Colt, etc..... you have no one really reliable to go back to for product support and service

    Century?
    IO?
    ARSENAL?
    TGI?

Pretty iffy-- its a crapshoot-- given that, the AK design does live up to its rep.

Agreed with everything you stated there. They do solid conversion work.

I'd pickup a Krebs before a Red Jacket.

I have nothing of value to add to this thread, I just wanted to say that this should be a sig line.

I don't believe they're in the same price range.

    Or are they?

    I've handled several RedJackets.

It seems like Red Jacket has become more of a sitcom based in a gun manufacturer/store than a custom shop which happens to have a show.

For $1400 I would wait for a rifle from Rifle Dynamics.
