On my way home on our county road I came upon a white Tuarus stopped in the road. Girl was at the wheel and guy was out picking something up in front of the car. Thought he'd hit a dog or something. Pretty soon I see the trunk pop and he comes around the side of car with a huge snapping turtle by the tail. That things head is jutting out and snapping fiercely. They had supper!!:wow:

Er, I may have resembled that remark a few times (I never ate snapping turtles, but I used to catch them and give them to people who did).

You can't learn redneck; you must be born with it.

Who says it's southern redneck? I remember many times, a family friend would drive down to our field camping spot with 3 or 4 big snapping turtles in the bed of the truck. The heads would come off, they'd be hung from a tree and left to bleed out for a bit until the turtle soup was made.

I never ate any because I was always extremely picky, but if we were to do it this summer, I'd try a little. Unless there's too many veggies in the soup.

    True story.

Kid in high school that was a big ding dong in every single way. Just an all around turd. To politely put it on GT.

Friends and I were driving and spotted a huge snapping turtle trying to cross the road. We picked it up and put it in the trunk of the car.

Drove a block away from the kids house and cut through the yards.

We put the turtle on his front porch, rang the doorbeel and ran away.

His mom answered the door looking around, looked down and saw this big ass turtle staring at her.

That was one of the times I've never laughed so hard in my life. My insides were hurting and tears streaming down my face.

We took off, and never knew what happened to the turtle. They probably took it down to the drain and let it go.

That's redneck with a small "r". A REDNECK would have shot the turtle from a moving vehicle OR taken it as roadkill. The "is it alive" test is performed by pouring a beer over its head and checking for air bubbles. Funny that they are always still alive!!!

There is a market for live snapping turtles here. $1 per pound live weight.

    OR.. maybe..

They saw a big a55 turtle in the road, and didn't want someone to hit it, so they took it to a pond or stream where they thought it would be safe. I am pretty redneck, but I will rescue turtles when possible. And you don't ride around in the car with a big snapper in your lap, you put it in the trunk.

And yes, I purposely wrote that last line that way..lol

Wow - Natty, do they sell to restaurants? I love turtle personally but have never seen it at any market (farmer or otherwise) and I'd be a buyer at a buck a pound or $3 or 4 cleaned!!!

I know 2 people that buy them, they will not say who they sell them to.. But I'll bet you could get the same price at your local Oriental restaurant.

I was referring to the catch it and eat it mentality, not any specific post.
