Anyone have any experience with the M&P 15 Sport? Looks like a good deal but doesn't have forward assist or a dust cover.

Not sure these days forward assist is even relevant. Whats your take on this?

These things are selling for $659 in my area but not sure how important the forward assist and dust cover are thse days.

I'm not sure $659 is a great price. List is $709.

No dust cover?? What a strange thing to cheap out on. Seriously, how much cost could that add to the thing?

It has a 1:8 twist? That's kind of interesting.

For just plinking around I think this is ok. For home defense or serious use I would prefer to stick with something more standard.

I haven't seen one in person yet but I think it'll be the best of the bargain basement ARs. They saved $ by removing the dust cover, integrating the trigger guard into the lower and having a Melonite lined barrel, leaving the rest of the components at the typical M&P 15 level of quality. If MSRP is $709 I think you'll see them close to $550 soon enough, that's an incredible price.

The barrel is Melonited on the exterior, not the bore, right? But apparently the barrel is NOT chrome-lined?

You can sometimes find a regular M&P 15 (like the OR model) for $700 or less.

Barrel is Melonite lined, not chrome lined.

Doesn't make any sense. You'd think it would cost S&W more money to create a new upper without a forward assist or dust cover.

Not necessarily if they bought out the designs, or a small company that was already producing them.

Chrome lined barrels are less accurate, AEBE.

It's not like they built a new revolutionary rifle from the ground up. They figured out a way to cut down production costs on each unit made.
