RUTAN SPACE VEHICLE TOPS 211,000 FEET
The suborbital SpaceShipOne funded by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen and designed by Burt Rutan and his team at Scaled Composites in Mojave, California, achieved another milestone last Thursday. To win the $10 million prize offered by the X Prize Foundation in St. Louis, the spaceship must reach 62.5 miles twice in a two-week period prior to January 1, 2005. Last Friday the rocket ship, piloted by Mike Melvill, reached 211,400 feet and a speed of Mach 2.5. The rocket engine cut off after 55 seconds at 150,000 feet, and the craft coasted to its peak altitude. During a portion of the flight, the flight director display was inoperative, but Melvill continued the climb using the external horizon.

I wonder if Burt Rutan is related to Dick Rutan who flew the aircraft voyager around the world non stop and refueled?

I thought so, but was not sure. My mother worked for Teledyne Continental Motors, which is the company that built the engine for the voyager air craft. She was also involved in the voyager project itself.

Anything she has regarding that effort will be very collectible as the years go by. You should preserve any documents/photos/etc for the future.

She has a lot of framed posters of the voyager air craft in flight with Rutan and Yeagers signature on it plus a lot of books and videos. At the explorium here there is a model of the voyager air craft hanging from the ceiling with a display of its engine and a picture her and the rest of the crew on the floor.

I do not see the big deal about flying above FL200. I do that all the time. A good percentage of the GA fleet can do that.

Now if you were thinking of FL2000, then I have to point out that there is no such thing. The flight levels go from FL180 (18,000ft) to FL600 (60,000 feet).
