Really like the feel of the 700 so far, but either will work, looking at a deer/elk rifle....with good glass, probably a 4x12 config, Redfield or Leupold. Nothing fancy, just a workhorse rifle.

Either one is a workhorse. The ruger ring and scope mount system is a very strong and solid setup. The 700 has some advantages of aftermarket stocks, etc... if that is a consideration. In terms of accuracy potential, I think the 700 with its push feed system gets the edge. The Ruger has a spinoff of controlled round feed that may get an advantage in reliability. I don't think performance-wise there will be a nickels worth of difference in the two.

Bottom line, fine the one you like and the seize the opportunity of the best deal and you can't go wrong. I think that the new model Nikon Prostaff in 4-12 or the Nikon Buckmasters in 4.5-14 on top of either the Remington or Ruger would meet your needs.

I would choose the one you can get the best deal on. More aftermarket for the 700, but for what you want, either will do just fine. I have a 700, and would like to have a Ruger as well.

I like your style, redfields are insanely nice scopes for the money. I see no difference between my redfield and my Leupold VX2. For the rifle......buy a Savage axis for 300 bucks, put a Rifle Basix trigger in it for 85 dollars and it will out shoot the Ruger and Remington. Ive got a Stevens model 200 by Savage in 22-250 that will shoot a ragged hole all day long at 100 yards.

OK, having handled all of them including a gorgeous Steyr pro hunter...I am fighting off the urge to buy bigger and get the Steyr. As sexy as it is with that hammered twist barrel and all....I think I am leaning heavily toward the Winchester M70 right now. The fit, finish and feel were all outstanding with this rifle.

Then I started drooling over the scopes, good grief. That Leupold VX-R is screaming for me. Dang it.

This past SaturdayI was looking hard at rifles. Looked at Cooper, Kimber, Winchester, Browining, Remington, Ruger, Marlin. I've always like and owned Remington 700's. I've never had one that would not produce less than MOA 5 shot groups. A number of them have averaged about .5-.7 MOA. My one and only hunting rifle is a Rem. 700 LH in .30-06. It averages .7 MOA w/ Nosler Balistic Tips. Since 1985 I have used it on everything in the S.E. U.S.A. From varmints up through deer, etc. it is without equal. Outstanding trigger... easily adjusted. Zero has never changed. Iron sights are dead on at 100 yds. Stock is extremely comfortable to use. Added a Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad. But... I've got the urge for a new rifle. And I do very much like the Ruger Hawkeye. If I ever find a left-handed Winchester, I'll buy it. But right now I'm really eying the Hawkeye. The ones I've handled are very nice... trigger is good... scope mount system is outstanding. Excellent controlled round feeding. Feeding, etc. is as nice as my 1939 Mauser.
