I have a chance to get a Ruger M77 Mark II boat paddle rifle in either a .223 or ..22LR.

Leaning toward the .223, but the price of ammo is less for the .22LR.

I do not hunt, but would want to be able to stop a threat.

Maybe I am stupid to even consider the .22LR

What do you guys think?

I have two 77/22s neither are the boat paddle stock. With that said I'd buy it if price was right. Rings are a big cost if the rifle doesn't come with them. Set of Rings will run 75$ or so.

Can get either a .223 or .22lr. .22 has green inserts

I'd buy both if I could but I like the 77s. Besides the rimfire I have a custom 22-250, 6.5 CM, and .308.

It would be fine, maybe no AR where you live? The trigger may be heavy, a replacement is an easy fix.

I've noticed lately used Ruger's with the boat paddle stock getting crazy expensive? I like them fine, if I could get one at a fair price I'd consider it but I'm not prepared to pay S&W pre-lock prices or JM Marlin prices for one.

Already have a black gun. Thinking about getting it a cousin. Thinking about the .223 because I already have the ammo.

What do you mean by "stop a threat"?
Any defensive use would automatically lean towards the 223. Obviously a bolt gun is not ideal for HD/SD, but could get the job done in a pinch.
