My 1911 started its life as a Kimber Custom TLE/RL II. I was not too impressed with the finish that it came with, it started wearing fast and the untreated barrel and inside of the magwell started rusting bad! Since this was my first firearm it holds certain sentimental value and it killed me to see it deteriorate that way.

Since the 1911 100 year anniversary is upon us I decided to do something special and give it a makeover. So i sent it to Robar for them to work their magic and apply their NP3 Plus coating inside and out. Then i ordered some nice custom cocobolo grips from Esmeralda. Well she is finally done and i could not be any happier with the result. The finish is amazing and so is the grip quality. It looks like a BRAND NEW GUN!
(Sorry for the crappy quality on the second pic, it was taken from a cell phone. I will add new pics when i take them with a real camera.

The finish wasn't all that bad before. How does NP3+ compare to hard chrome?

That picture was from 2008. The finish was almost completely gone on the front and the barrel was excessively rusted.

As far as NP3+ compared to hard chrome I noticed there is hardly any glare/reflectivity on the NP3+. I believe hard chrome is a harder finish but the NP3+ has better lubricity and corrosion resistance.

The TGO's frame, on the left, is NP3 and the Baer UM is hardchrome. The NP3 is slick and feels a lot like the surface of a teflon frying pan, which makes cleanup really easy.

Looks good. I've seen kimbers rust like you mentioned. Now your baby is protected.

    Very nice!

I had the same experience with my Kimber Pro TLE. Barrel rusted very easily and the finish held up worse than the parkerizing on my SA Mil-Spec.
