I've carried a 2.5" .38 OWB at 4 o'clock consistently. Not sure about a longer barrel, think that would change things, but with OWB carry I'd agree that holster experimentation may be in order to suit your gun. Maybe try something that rides higher.
After a while, the upholstery will mold to the butt of the gun, easing the pressure and making you feel less prepared when you're not carrying and you feel the dip behind your ribs.
