I have a Desantis undercover shoulder rig I use for long trips. As a right handed person it feels natural in the car. If I am walking I prefer an IWB (alien gear is what I have for the G22).

If you are on a long car trip how are you carrying your large frame Glock?

I use a Galco Miami Classic for my 1911s on a long road trip or a shoulder holster made by a local leather craftsman for my G23. On a long road trip, it's hard to beat a shoulder holster for me. My cars tend to be tight inside and I normally carry OWB which can be hard on leather seats. Heck, any seats.

I have a Miami Classic for my 1911s too. I like it a lot.

I can’t imagine IWB or appendix carry for 8 hours in a car.
My son has glued a holster for his handgun into the center console of his car. He doesn’t have a shoulder rig yet.

He says an empty holster doesn’t bother him in the car, but even that is uncomfortable for me.

No matter how you choose to carry, consistent presentation is really important to be able to develop muscle memory. If you change holsters and carry position you are not getting the best out of your carry method. Same with changing to weapons with different controls and control locations. If you carry a G22 in an OWB holster on your hip it would make sense to carry a G27 which will interfere less with the seat in a similar holster. You're not changing any of the controls and still have the same ammo. I use a Kydex holster that allows the full size G22 slide to protrude. When I switch to the G27 there is no protrusion. I also use, in the car, full size G22 mags. So the only real difference is barrel length which not be an issue at close range encounters.

Never did understand why you change how you carry . If you carry IWB when "walking " why not wear that same rig when driving . If its uncomfortable YOU NEED A NEW HOSTER .

I have 30 years of concealed carry with far to many 'road trips " between 8 and 14 hrs and wear the same way in the same position I do when working , walking or anything else . Handgun over the years have run from a firestar m40 to a small lite carry like a kahr TP40 to my p320c or lw commander 1911 in the same ole hybrid iwb with only a kydex body change for the last 14 of those years .

I've heard the argument that strong side IWB is difficult to draw when seated in a vehicle.

But my counter to that is you can either drive or you can shoot. My truck weighs 7,400 lbs, as long as it can still move I'm driving, either away from the threat or over it. If the truck can't move sitting in it is a death trap and I'm getting out of it and shooting the threat. I can draw as I exit the truck.

On a long road trip the chance I will have to draw while driving down the interstate is infinitesimally small. The most likely scenario for needing a gun for self defense is at a fuel, rest or food stop. And in those situations having the gun in its normal position is the best thing.

My same G-23, and holster work just fine in my truck, and Wife's car. For the same reason I never wear a coat in the winter while driving. In my Ton Truck I had an old holster that worked with a 1911 between seat and console. Covered with shop towel no one ever saw it just a shop towel laying in the seat.

That is a helpful reply. Thank you.

The shoulder rig is mainly for comfort but I did feel like the pistol is trapped behind my hip. Especially in the winter when I am wearing a jacket.

Your point about shooting or driving is well taken. It is less likely to be needed in traffic than while getting gas or food.

vafish YOU have Heard the argument that strong side IWB is difficult to draw when seated in a vehicle. Sounds like you have not tried it to see .

$up3r_Dad I don't carry behind my hip , never have !! 3:00 maybe 3:15 with a little forward cant . I can ease my shirt edge up over the seat belt so clearing my handgun is no harder to do than standing at the line on a range and with out any odd body movement . I also don't plan to shoot from my car or truck but when I am out side of it I want to keep everything as much as possible the same as possible to my normal carry habits . People do get sucker punched when out side of the vehicles when on the road so keep as much as possible the same .

Example but not gun related . For years I carried a large 4.5" two blade case pocket knife in my back pocket next to my wallet . It had a key ring thru the hole that was in the tail end on the knife and a 4 strand branded rawhide loop attached to the key ring ..

I got sucker punched in a bar one night and have no idea what I did for a few minutes after we got away from the bar . Buddy said when I got hit my head dropped a bit it stumbled two steps back and came up with my raw hide loop with a over head swing . Hit the sucker puncher on the side of the head and turned him off and hit one of his buddys some where around the neck area before friends on both side broke it up . I have no idea what happened only what friends said happened . That's a type of muscle memory and pure reaction you develop only with time and practice .

Yes, more likely to need it when you are vulnerable, outside the vehicle. Convenience store at 2 am, broken down, etc.

I normally carry OWB strong side but have used, for years, Bianchi, X15 medium shoulder holster. Have had since LEO days. Holds a HUGE amount of different handguns, from G19/17, to 1911s, to K frame Smiths.

And as you note, very comfortable for vehicle carry and deployment. I still practice with it regularly, but have to return to LEO range as many civilian ranges don't allow them, or drawing from any holster.

I don't poo poo them. If you train with them, they are viable. Does generally mean a heavier cover garment.

Just my $.02, YMMV.

If it's a full size gun and a long road trip, it's probably just going to be in a bag. I wouldn't choose a full size to carry IWB for long trips simply because it won't be comfortable. I'll go with a subcompact or compact, which I can carry for hours.

If it gets uncomfortable or affects my bloodflow, it's going in the center console or side door pocket, where the spare mags live on long road trips. I really wouldn't over think it or worry too much about quick access, drawing etc... just the fact that the gun is nearby and accessible is enough.

OWB normally and while driving... If I'm on a motorcycle these days, still OWB if I'm in Texas since I don't care if it shows. If I'm somewhere else that does not have open-carry, then I'll probably use a fanny-pack if on a motorcycle. If I'm somewhere that doesn't respect my natural born right to bear arms, then the gun gets smaller and deeper concealed.

While I sort of agree with the memory thing ( to be physiologically correct it is nerve not muscle memory) I have found I can vary my carry method and with a shot timer see no difference of significance between multiple methods of carry. While Clint Smith among others has said carrying a gun is supposed to be comforting not comfortable, my personal take is a comfortable carry method means you are far more likely to have a gun with you when the need arises.

I've carried a 2.5" .38 OWB at 4 o'clock consistently. Not sure about a longer barrel, think that would change things, but with OWB carry I'd agree that holster experimentation may be in order to suit your gun. Maybe try something that rides higher.

After a while, the upholstery will mold to the butt of the gun, easing the pressure and making you feel less prepared when you're not carrying and you feel the dip behind your ribs.
