I never thought I'd see that word so often in the print media. I'm actually sort of surprised since Putin made that big deal about not judging them too harshly. I almost wonder if it's not a set up for him to be magnanimous and pardon them. Can he do that?

    Let's see. :dunno:

Did the kenyan learn it from the putin playbook or did putin take it from the kenyan playbook? Hard to say? Or maybe it is just the new world order playbook from the same UN gang.

Putin just wants to tighten the grip, and a lot of the citizens are fine with that.

I have a cousin that was an agricultural international trade specialist of some kind. He married a Russian girl in Moscow, in 1993. When they came to visit, they stopped by to show her what goes into building my new modern home here in the Heartland, USA.

He shared with me that most folks there were uneasy with the whole aspect of commercial trade, and they were very uncomfortable with making big decisions by themselves. He predicted the recoil from Democracy way back then.

They'll figure it out. It just takes more time than most people understand. The entire culture has to make a paradigm shift, and it can take a generation or three.

A shame. This does not bode well for US relations w/Russia.

And we will have yet another millions of people living under tyranny.

Maybe a well-aimed bullet will pass through his skull, but I don't have high hopes for a non-tyrant to take over. Regardless, when a tyrant is offed, it is a good thing.

I hope GT mods will consider that I am talking about an evil tyrant meeting a violent end and not infract/banhammer me on it.

You can be a dictator without being a tyrant. His foreign policy has become awful but he does show a lot of personal restraint given the amount of power he has. As far as we know, he's not shelling cities, torturing political prisoners, or setting up rape rooms in numerous lavish palaces. An underfunded democratic government lacks the checks and balances to prevent corruption, particularly at the local level where it affects ordinary people's daily lives. Yeltsin's democracy wasn't all that great for the majority of Russians.

The globalization game is afoot in Russia like everywhere else. Putin will be able to seem moderate soon enough.

The wealth of information the internet brings to Russians is a bear (No pun intended.) to the older thinkers and old "powers that be" in Russia.

sometimes a strong democracy is good look at Spain, Franco ruled with an iron fist, now is overrun by Islam taking the crosses out of the churches, crime is way up, graffiti etc. Cubans complained about Batista and look how good they had for 60+ years.

Spain wasn't a democracy under Franco. Franco's forces actually overthrew the democratically elected government, with the support of the Nazi's. Also, an argument could be made that it is the nature of the exploitative capitalist-state system that has oppressed the third-world countries, causing their people to get pissed and fly planes into towers on the extreme end and to simply move where the jobs are on the less extreme end. Who knew they would take their culture with them?

If all you know of Russia is contained within the last 10-25 years then yes, it looks like it's going downhill.

If you know what Leningrad and Petrograd are, then chances are you see things as looking up.
