I've been spending a lot of time in hospital waiting rooms this week, and I've been exposed to a lot of ringtones. People use a lot of obnoxious ringtones. They probably sound OK when the owner is browsing through looking for something unique (and cool), but in an "inside voice environment" I think they present an image of the owner which is probably unintended.

Another thing I notice are middle-age and older people who have obviously let their kids and grandkids pick their ringtones. A couple have even mentioned that they didn't know how to change them.

    It's an interesting social phenomenon.

Also, I'm not sure that a lot of people are acquainted with the "inside voice environment" concept. ;)

I thought the "cool ringtones" fad had died a quiet death.

I use just a few to identify certain callers but I just make one from a popular song. You do hear some good ones while out and about.

It bothers me that they aren't long enough when it's a good song that is being used as a ring tone.

I hate that freight train ring tone. :steamed:

My phone vibrates first so I can answer it without making unnecessary noise. And when it does ring, it, well, rings. You know, makes a ringing sound.

I think I'm going to use the theme from Mr. Ed.

    Same here.

Some ring tones are right funny but I don't want to listen to a couple bars of a song while I hurry to answer the phine.

So my Star Wars Imperial March would probably bug you pretty bad, huh? How about my text alert where R2D2 chirps at me? Would that bug you too?

Mine is very annoying to most people... It is the Jersey Shore theme song "Get Crazy".

There are two reasons for this:

young people who are just stupid/don't care
old people who grew up using a standard phone, you always heard yourself through the ear piece a little bit and you can't on a cellphone, so you subconsciously think the other person can't hear you so you talk louder.

    my phone just rings.

I also do not like ringback tones. I do not want to hear your stupid *** Nickelback song every time I call you.

I have bad hearing and wear a hearing aid.

I chose a ring tone that I am familiar with, so I can pick it out in the "din" of sounds in public.

"Lady In Red". Reminds me of a time with my wife, long, long ago . Phone vibrates first.

What I find amusing are the people that use the old time home phone ringtones. If they are so attracted to the tone, I always think they should just have a land line at house with one of these:

I suspect that (1) a lot of people grew up with that sound and subconsciously recognize it quickly, and (2) ATT spent a lot of time getting that ring perfected. So it's a good choice, I guess.

That would work inside the house but how am I going to lug that phone with me and have it working outside of the house?

all numbers except 1 utter a single low volume beep. i hate being with a customer or potential customer and having a ringing phone interrupt.

the 1 number that rings is Girl's work number because if she's calling me from work it's a dire emergency.
