The reviews I have seen on the Tipton gun vises say they are too flexible and won’t properly clamp on to a rifle. Is there a better option to hold a rifle steady when mounting a scope?

For an AR, I use a Magblock in a vise. For Bolt guns, I typically use rubber jaws and also mount them in the vise. 6" (or 4 or 8 9 inch) vise is a good investment if you do not have one. Rubber, brass and aluminum jaws to hold a variety of shapes is a cheap and useful add.

Any of the plastic vises to hold a gun are okay for cleaning, maybe, but yes, are too flexible to actually use for working on rifles.
