Marlin 44mag.... In Indiana where I live, can only hunt deer with a shotgun or a rifle in a pistol cartridge. It's lever action and very reliable and fun to shoot.

You're in the entry AR price range. Smith & Wesson, Bushmaster, Windham Weaponry, & Palmetto State Armory have guns in that price range.

You could also consider an AK.

AR in 5.56 with a .22lr and .300 blackout uppers purchased later. Or a lever gun in handgun caliber. You'd pretty much have it all covered.

I been eyeballin the ruger mini 30, used to have a maadi ak. Wouldn't mind a norinco milled receiver though.
