Although I've found plenty of things to do around the house with the free time created by COVID-19 restrictions, I found something I thought a bit surprising when fiddling with my 3 revolvers and checking their barrel/cylinder gap measured with a feeler gage.

    S&W 500 Mag Performance Center - about 0.0055"
S&W 500 Mag 8.375" barrel - slightly tighter at 0.005", probably 3x as many rounds through it as the PC, maybe 1000
    Then the surprise
    Ruger SP101 .357 Mag - 0.004"

I have seven Smiths and one Ruger revolver. The GP100's cylinder gap is very difficult to see.

My Dan Wesson interchangeable barrel guide shows a factory gap feeler gauge of .005. I tighten mine to where I can remove it put no clearance to move it back in.

Well now you've done it. Tomorrow it's 4 revolvers (3 Smiths and a Ruger) and feeler gauges.

Be sure to clean the cylinder and forcing cone before measuring.

With a DW you can make it whatever you want, and change it for each type of ammo if you want to.

To can even close it to zero if you need to use a silencer :)

Hopefully the girlfriend is appropriately appreciative and she and your son get along for a good while. Don

    I have a Freedom Arms in .44 magnum that a .002 feeler gauge won’t even fit .

What I will tell you is.....

By Smith and Wesson specification, a Barrel Cylinder gap.(B.C. gap) ...

Is considered acceptable from .002 to .01 inches.

In the "old" days a B.C. gap was considered optimal at .004.

She is a great gal, if he botches this one up he will be in deep with me. I wouldn't do it for just anyone.

Cool, good on you. I think some people let a "keeper" go in search for the unattainable "perfect" spouse, the unicorn that doesn't exist. Don

Really? Have you tried this? Will the cylinder still turn through all six shots?

How silenced is the resulting gun?

    So many questions.

You could shoot, open and turn the cylinder, then close and shoot again. Should make a good movie scene :)

Ruger New Vaquero in 44 Magnum just allows a .003 feeler gauge.

I think that any fouling will bind the cylinder. A particle of unburned powder, tiny sliver of lead, etc.

That's where I set my DW mod 15.
I get much under that and sometimes fouling can foul things. Also not unusual for cylinders to be uneven from one chamber to the next.

Not really surprised, Freedom Arms revolvers display superb manufacturing quality. Don
