Here is another solution in search of a problem.
Interesting idea, sort of like Socialism. I suspect in practice it won’t work out as well.

AI can no doubt do incredible things. I don’t think it can accurately determine if a shooter is acting in self defense, at least not every time. Anything that makes a tool less useful for a bad actor potentially makes it less useful for the law-abiding.

And then there’s the obvious downside that it can be programmed to favor one race over another, one type of hat, if you will, over another, etc.

I can envision other serious problems. And it would be easy to bypass mechanically, so even if mandated, a mass shooter, who doesn’t care about the law, won’t be stopped by it, anyway.

Not only no, but hell no.

The smug elitism voiced within the research statement is further evidence of why this country is so polarized...who the Hell do these folks think they are?? the God police?...ETA I sure hope none of my tax $ funded this crap research!

Dumbest thing I have ever read wrt to computation/AI.

If the AI is so smart, why not just take over his car and drive him to jail? Or lock the doors to his home so he cannot get out? Or dial 911? Never mind they do not propose a solution to deal with the 500+ Million non AI guns, probably 1 billion before this AI system would come online.

I'm a computer scientist, and have written several commercial, classic "AI" systems. Trust me; there's no such thing as "artificial intelligence".

Another “smart gun” headed straight to the dust-bin.

Oh man we could go places with this. Imagine a world in which everyone has a registered online ID. Now you make a comment/post somewhere that is unapproved by the central government. AI software flags your comment, alerts a central database, which then transmits a signal causing your Smart Shooter handgun to disable itself. Schumer and AOC would be proud.

WTF? :ROFLMAO: :LOL::rolleyes:

It should be legal to hang somebody just for writing abut something that stupid.

Don't worry, the artificial intelligence will decide who gets killed. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't every single robot/AI apocalypse story start with the AI deciding ethics requires it to kill everybody?:

Why the obsession with mass shootings among the left? They are a infinitesimal part of gun crime.

I once had a argument with a liberal professor about school shootings. He said whatever necessary to protect children was worth it. I proceeded to say that he should propose legislation to outright ban, and make it a federal felony to own a swimming pool, or hot tub because around 1000 kids die in them every year. Then he said pools aren't designed to kill children. I replied neither is my ar-15 however one of these things is constitutionally protected the other is a pool.

No thanks. If it has a computer in it, the government can track it and also remotely shut it down.

Also, a computerized gun would need to have its battery recharged regularly.

Imagine if a criminal breaks into your house at 4am and you forgot to plug your gun into the charger before you went to sleep.

Some time in the early 2000's I was reading one of the more prominent magazines (Time or People or some such) and it had a full page article about how U.S. military rifles should be equipped with a sensor that only allowed it to fire if the rifle "saw" an enemy uniform. It wouldn't fire on civilian clothing. That's how bright these people are.
