Dad lost his dog about 1 yr ago and wants another.

I'm going thru the application process to rescue a GSD for him.

Would it give the dog an aneurysm if we changed its name, or do you recommend keeping the name it was adopted with?

    Thank you fer yer support.

If the dog comes to the name you can leave it alone. I adopted a dog from the shelter and the name they gave him he responds to so I left it alone. I would play it by ear and see what happens. Good luck with the new pup.

The dog won't mind at all, by the time it adjusts to new people it will be adjusted to the new name. Besides it is just as likely, maybe even more so, that the previous name was often accompanied with anger or abuse.

Call 'em anything you want...just don't call 'em late for dinner :wavey:

Seriously, I found a boxer many years ago and after trying to find his owners, decided to keep him. I had no idea what his name was so I gave him a new one that he took to kindly.

The dog won't care. It doesn't place the same importance on a name that we silly humans do of our own.

As long as it's not VERY old, I don't think it would be a problem to change the name.

It is not a cool name like Dieter ... IF it is a male, no damn murse!

I didn't even think of that.

Thanks for the tips gang. There are 40 dogs at this rescue, and we have narrowed the choices to 5 or 6.

Once the application process is over, we will go meet them and find the best fit for our pack.

Dieter will enjoy having a buddy, and a dog will do mom and dad good.

I read the thread title and thought you had some sort of SAR dog that was called Killer or something.

"Go find the hikers, Killer. Go on, boy!" If that were the case, I'd DEFINITELY change his name. Be less stranded hikers dying of fear that way.

I'd say if you're holding a dog biscuit you can call him anything you want and he'll come find you. My dogs answer to a number of different names; they have more nicknames that I can count and will answer to any of them. It's kind of like children where you only use their given name when they are in trouble!

You should be fine, the dog will adapt.

Our rescue was named Chester, and is now Meeko (the 'Coon in Disney Pocahontas.)
