The shop should have recommended a new cap, at the customer's option, with the associated reasoning behind the replacement, but that's it.

Just the opposite for the water pump I installed last week...original Dodge used a plastic impeller, I found a metal one and went with that.

Radiator needed replacement, why? Replacing the cap with a new factory spec cap is cheap insurance against another quick return for another new radiator, Find a better shop, buy a factory spec cap at Pep Boys.

Check your bill and see if they charged you for a new cap. If not, you could call them and ask them if they'll give you a new cap for the cost of the repair, and if they won't, don't lose any sleep over it, just buy a new cap yourself. They aren't expensive.

If they're smart, they will give you a new cap at no cost. But you won't know that until you ask.

Replacing a cap with one that's a lower pressure will easier on all the hoses, and seals/gaskets... but it also makes it easier for the coolant to boil, which could cause a hot stop, which could damage your engine. Not likely, but should be mentioned.

I've only had to buy a couple or three new radiators which I put on myself. I never got a new cap with the radiators.

I run a 50/50 antifreeze/distilled-water mix with a lower pressure radiator cap on both my vehicles here in the Arizona heat with the a/c on full blast, idling in traffic, and have never once overheated.

Oh thats just great Doc... now your going to change the frequency sound of the coolant by going with a metal impeller. When that frequency change happens inside the coolant system, it creates homotrons... and ya know what... those homotrons run around blowing everything!!! Damn`it Doc, whyyyy, whyyyyy?!?!?! Oh one more thing Doc, that metal impeller, yeahhhhh, there goes the damn`d neighborhood... metal rock music be screeching from hell now just because you switched that damn pump. Be very cautious turnin`that damn radio on. Jeeeeziss Doc!

But did they replace the antifreeze or just filter the old stuff thru an old sock?

If the inner gaskets and seals are not deteriorated, then a working used cap is a survivor - and it is a known good product.

If you actually LIKE a shop loading up the parts shotgun, then get Ye to a dealership.

I'm sure they will gladly sell you everything for a new radiator - including new ball joints, a brake job and some new tail light bulbs.

A new cap - likely made in China is an untested component and it has no work history.
Just sayin' --- new radiators do not NEED a new radiator cap.
    New coolant? Yup!
    New hoses? Maybe... depends.
New thermostat? Depends why the vehicle arrived in the first place.

A stuck thermostat can push the heat so high that a radiator can fail... or a hose --- or a heater core that's marginal.... lots of things.

When you hear hoofbeats, don't go looking for zebras.
