The California Assembly has passed a bill setting up a commission to assess reparations for slavery. That on top of everything else, COVID mismanagement, Riots, police de-funding, payments to illegal immigrants, etc. And then there is statewide rent control. Eviction prohibition with now a bill to make it permanent in some cases -- not sure about that one yet. So, here I am in a state that is $56B in deficit from the Corona Virus, passing a bill to tax people who weren't born to pay money to people who weren't born during the period of slavery. And my ancestors on my mother's side came to the US from Holland well after slavery was abolished. On my father's side my ancestors lived in Massachusetts back during slavery and before since the 1640's. So I have to pay taxes to pay reparations? NFW. The inmates are running the asylum. I know I'm slow at thinking, but I've finally decided to get serious about moving out of California. We have a perfectly nice house in Eagle Idaho -- on a hill with a view. It needs some cosmetic fixing up, but my wife likes to do rehabs and is good at it. So as of now, that's where we are going. We just signed a 1 year lease on that house for renters, so we have a year to get ready. Also, I'm going to gradually move some, or perhaps all, of my rentals out of California with 1031 exchanges -- either to Idaho or Arizona. The only way I'd change my mind is if I see some semblance of rationality returning to SF Bay area and California government. Fat chance.
