Last night, thanks to our wonderful weather and poorly suited tires, I managed to slide into a curb. No major damage except a gaping hole in my oil pan. So I paid the $90 to get it towed to the local dealer. They just called with the estimate $515!!! for an oil pan!!! Its a 2003 VW GTI 1.8t. I don't claim to be an expert but that sounds awfully pricey. Any ASE-types that can help me out here?

Is that amount for the whole repair? Not just the pan? Because it may be labor intensive if they have to lift the engine or remove various pieces just to get to the pan.

Haven't done VW's in a few years so I can't remember. Does it have an aluminum pan or do you have to drop the subframe to remove it? Either will increase the cost.

I worked with VW for about 10 years. You need to get a detailed estimate on what is being done. Stuff ain't cheap. Oops, just noticed it's a turbo. That alone can increase costs substantially.

What did you think it was going to cost?

the parts came to 239, and labor 240. Ouch. I did some research and they did gouge a little on the parts. I could have had the pan and the gasket for less the $200 at some discount sites. Not sure about the subframe. I haven't been under it yet to look. It's a little too low for me to do anything without a lift or some good jackstands.

thanks for the replies though.
