Your best bet is to actually call the ATF. Listening to people here on whether or not you can remove factory markings is bad ju-ju.

    Give them a call-

    ATF Firearms Technology Branch - (304) 616-4300

In Kentucky, it is a class A misdemeanor (up to 12 months in jail) to "deface, cover, alter, or destroy the manufacturer's serial number or any other distinguishing number or identification mark" on a firearm, or if you possess one, know that has been done to it.

    Check your state's laws.

Then add an M9. They lack the warning markings.

From the slide, my main concern was removing the importation marks, but it makes sense what you guys are saying about it being replaceable, so that's not a concern. The country of origin, and model are on the frame where I want to slim it down though, so I'm still curious about that. Not removing the serial number is obvious.

Yeah, but I wanna remove the make, and country of origin.
That phone number has an extra number....
Got a link to Arizona's laws regarding modifications?

They don't answer technical questions over the phone, and either must write, or contact a local branch.

California you can not remove any identifying marks. I would imagine its the same everywhere since the make is needed when you run a firearm..

I called these guys. Got ahold of an agent who was very informative, and cool to talk to. He said that I'm welcome to upgrade parts (slide, example), and could buy something that's slab sided, and requires no ID marks. The manufacturer, as creating a marketable firearm, is required to put the make, model, and caliber on there. Also, if not made in the US, country of origin, and importer. Therefore, the only way I can remove the marks on the slide, is to buy another one.

The marks on the frame (manufactuer, model, country of origin) may not be removed. He stated that if all that was there was the serial number, that'd be all he had to go off of, besides what the owner would say. He could still track down the make/model/origin with that number, but that info still needs to be on there, since the manufacturer was required to put it on in the first place. Again, because they're making complete firearms that are marketed for sale.

Then we BS'd about home made guns, for a while. Dude was way informative, and just cool to talk to. Answered all my questions easily, and very polite.

Glad to see you checked with some officials before you did something that could have landed you in hot water.

BUT - you are in luck, in Arizona:

    The definition of "deface"

Federal law may be a whole other story.
