Are these good defensive rounds? I haven't fired these in a while, bit IIRC it burns hot and is a bit dirty. They are about 25 bucks/100 rounds, so I'm wondering if they are only good for target practice.

Certainly better than ball ammo, but there are better choices IMO. Lots of choices in the 124gr+P & 147grJHP that will give better penetration & still expand well. You don;t shoot SD/HD ammo much, so spending $30-$35/50 once every couple years shouldn't break the bank.

Shot the Rem 115jhp into one gallon water filled jugs.

From Glock 19 bullet stopped in 3rd jug fully expanded.

From Kahr CW9 same load also stopped in 3rd jug just half expanded.

Chronograph 3 shot averages:

Rem 100 pack 115jhp 969
WWB 100 Value Pak 115fmj 978
Corbon 115+P jhp 1329
Fed Tactical HST 124+P 1201
Blazer Brass 115fmj 1184
Speer GD JHP 115+P+ 1296

Same Glock 19, same day.

Take what you will from the results.

YMMV

I'd say the thing with smaller calibers such as 9mm is you have to be picky on the SD ammo you purchase.

.45 and even .40, not so much.....

Jugs lined back to back? I guess that means over penetration? Did the cordons and the hst's stop in the first jug?
No, about right. Water is not a good bullet stopper. Expect about twice the penetration in water as ballistic gel. If anything, it's slightly shallow penetration compared to better/heavier/faster rounds. Below 975fps w/ a 115gr bullet is slightly better than 380, very slightly.:dunno:

OP, is your life worth $25 or $30? If so, disdain from using some Walmart "special" for defense ammo and go buy a box of Gold Dots, BPLE or Rangers that have a proven history of working on bodies. Forget backyard "Aquaman" testing as it proves nothing.

I have gold dots and some old school federal hydroshoks already. Just wondering if cheaper hollow points are worth it. I considered buying a box for target practice, but the 100 rnd value pack of wwb is 5 bucks cheaper.

Jugs were against each other.

Faster JHP slugs caused more violent damage to 1st two jugs stopping against back of 3rd or inside 4th.

Doing well in water jugs may not be scientific but gives decent comparisions.

Those that poo-poo this information is where YMMV is addressed to.

Good Luck

There is a very good chance that your MV readings are off. Being too close to the chrono often gives false low readings. The Rem and WW should be close to the Blazer rounds. I don't know if a [email protected] 969fps would even cycle a G19. It's not supposed too and loading that light never functioned my G17.

I 'proof' fired it in both of my 9mm's, a Beretta 92 & a Sig P250SC; though NOT a preferred jhp load, I now know that it works and has decent accuracy if I even needed to grab some in a pinch; basically it is marketed for folks that don't want to spend extra money to practice with fmj, proof with jhp, and buy more jhp for carry/HD; with 100 round value packs you can practice and proof with a jhp load and have leftover for carry?HD

Probably better than 115 grain FMJ, but there are better SD choices out there. A 115 grain load is going to lack deep penetration. A cheap hollow point probably can't be relied upon to expand when going through clothing.

Choose from this list and you can't go wrong:

Barnes XPB 115gr HP (35515) loaded by Cor-Bon (DPX09115)
Winchester Partition Gold 124gr JHP (RA91P)
Winchester Ranger-T 124 gr +P JHP (RA9124TP)
Winchester Ranger-T 127gr JHP +P+ (RA9TA)
Winchester Ranger-T 147gr JHP (RA9T)
Winchester Bonded 147gr JHP (RA9B/Q4364)
Speer Gold Dot 124gr JHP +P (53617)
Speer Gold Dot 147gr JHP (53619)
Remington Golden Saber 147gr JHP (GS9MMC)
Federal Tactical 124gr JHP (LE9T1)
Federal Tactical 135gr JHP +P (LE9T5)
Federal HST 147gr JHP (P9HST2)
