"Officer Cappelletty was shot and killed after he and another officer responded to reports of gun shots on South Ridge Drive shortly before 0700 hours.

When the officers arrived, they encountered a suspect with a gun standing in the front lawn of a home. The suspect opened fire on the officers, who then returned fire. Officer Cappelletty and the suspect were both fatally wounded. Officer Cappelletty was transported to CJW Medical Center where he succumbed to his wounds.

Officer Cappelletty had graduated from the academy only five months earlier. He is survived by his wife."
I did not know Ryan, but my friend did. A couple of nights when I was riding with him, he talked about the impact Ryan's death had on him and the department in the short five months he was on the street.

So, in memory of Ryan and the four other Chesterfield Officers killed in the Line of Duty:
    Lamont Edwards - EOW 01/05/1957,
    John Thomas - EOW 10/29/1969,
Graig Rath - EOW 05/27/1999, and
    Gary Buro - EOW 05/04/2006,

and in honor of all those he and they left behind...

    The Uniform of Green
Written by Sgt. John J. Coffey Jr. and wife

His Uniform is pressed perfectly at the seams
it's not the usual police blue, but green
it hangs in the bedroom each night
Not knowing the next days plight

His family knows he has made a choice
to wear this uniform, not out of vanity or greed
He is there to uphold justice
and to protect all those in need

With the light of the sun there comes a new day
His wife kisses his check gently
He straightens his lapel and goes off on his way

As he heads out the door he smiles
because he knows he has been given enough love
but prays for God to send
angels to protect him from above

He gets the call of duty, the sirens wail
will this be the day justice will prevail

There's a chill in the breeze
    hearts are not at ease
    today he gave his life
    the ultimate sacrifice

To his fellow police officers he
    was a brother and friend
    they will honor his memory
    to the bitter end

He risked his life and gave it all
today he received the eternal call

    He now walks his beat
    on God's golden streets
    and his uniform of green
in heaven can proudly be seen

    Sgt. John J. Coffey Jr.
