That day more than 3 years ago still seems like yesterday. I was supposed to have been riding with him that night, up until about 2 hours before the collision. I got called in. Turns out he refused 2 riders that evening right before the call that led to the crash. RIP, boss.

Another one that was kinda local (Southern Indiana is just across the bridge from us)...there's radio traffic available online of this shooting. I listened to it one time, and can't bring myself to do it again. The deputy got shot, and all he did was think of his coworkers running into the line of fire; he kept warning them, even as he was dying. Like I said, I can't listen to it again...too hard, even though I didn't know the guy -

Did you know Landon? That was sad. I remember when this happened. Seems like just yesterday. Hard to believe it's coming up on two years...

I knew Landon, but not very well. He was my old beat partner's FTO while they were both at CHP. We spoke on the phone with each other at length about lateraling to LAPD, and encouraged me to do the same.

I remember walking into the station that morning and seeing the black bands. I asked, "What happened?" All anyone could tell me was, "LAPD, in a T/A." I opened up my email and there was his name... I couldn't believe it.

I knew Billy....we did Civil Air Patrol together for a few years. How did you know him?

Billy had just been hired full-time as a deputy when I started as a reserve and was actually the first person I ever rode with. He worked for us maybe another year or two before he left to go south. His widow also dispatched for us for a while. He was the most motivated deputy with the worst luck I've ever known. He fell off a second-story balcony in the academy and landed face-first. He also managed to get run-over by a DUI on a traffic stop and get his femur broken. I've got plenty of Billy stories if you're ever interested. He was a great guy who's still missed.
