Yup. It still is, look around. Plenty of good country out there. Montgomery Gentry, Trace Adkins, Jamey Johnson, Toby Keith, Alan Jackson, and on and on and on...

As far as old school guys, how about George Jones, Charley Pride, Willie Nelson?

There sure is a lot of stuff on the country channel that ain't country. A lot of it just sounds like generic Nickelback-esque rock and roll, with a southern-twangy singer and a fiddle thrown in to make it "country".

Good question. I'm a bluegrass musician, so I've got THAT tradition covered. I can say that if you look for it there's a fairly strong traditional country music scene out there....(which some say bluegrass is a part.) Anyway, Google search and check it out.

Most of the old country boys playin' back in the day were some hard partying men.I worked security for one of Waylon's party's back in the late '70's,good lord those men could sure throw a party. These kids now days in music have no idea and Waylon and his crew would have put them to shame when it came down to partying. Some wild stuff indeed.

You Never Even Called Me By My Name

Written By Steve Goodman
As Recorded By David Allan Coe

........WELL, A FRIEND OF MINE NAMED STEVE GOODMAN WROTE THAT SONG
AND HE TOLD ME IT WAS THE PERFECT COUNTRY & WESTERN SONG
I WROTE HIM BACK A LETTER AND I TOLD HIM IT WAS NOT THE PERFECT COUNTRY & WESTERN SONG BECAUSE HE HADNT SAID ANYTHING AT ALL ABOUT MAMA,
OR TRAINS,
OR TRUCKS,
OR PRISON,
OR GETTING DRUNK

WELL HE SAT DOWN AND WROTE ANOTHER VERSE TO THE SONG
AND HE SENT IT TO ME,
AND AFTER READING IT,
I REALIZED THAT MY FRIEND HAD WRITTEN THE PERFECT
COUNTRY & WESTERN SONG
AND I FELT OBLIGED TO INCLUDE IT ON THIS ALBUM

THE LAST VERSE GOES LIKE THIS HERE:
WELL, I WAS DRUNK THE DAY MY MAMA GOT OUT OF PRISON
AND I WENT TO PICK HER UP IN THE RAIN
BUT BEFORE I COULD GET TO THE STATION IN MY PICKUP TRUCK
SHE GOT RUNNED OVER BY A DAMNED OLD TRAIN

CHORUS:
AND I'LL HANG AROUND AS LONG AS YOU WILL LET ME
AND I NEVER MINDED STANDING IN THE RAIN
NO, A YOU DON'T HAVE TO CALL ME DARLIN', DARLIN'
YOU NEVER EVEN CALL ME
WELL I WONDER WHY YOU DON'T CALL ME
WHY DON'T YOU EVER CALL ME BY MY NAME

THIS... Too much infusion of Pop Music into country....to bring it over to the pop charts...Pop artists burn out quickly.....need replacing...
