    Hey good folks,
I love my M&P 15 AR and I'm ready for optics. It will be used for self-defense and under 50 yards. Should I get a red dot or a low power scope? Thanks, John

Mission drives the gear train. That's red dot territory.

Red dot out to 200 yards IMO

That said, were you aware there are 1X To 4X optics so you can have a red dot and scope combined

    I wouldn't mind having one

I have red dot on my work rifle. But I’ve never been big on using optics. I rely on iron sights for anything past 25 yards. I like red dot inside 25 yards as I find it easier for holdover.

Self defense and 50 yards max? Definitely a red dot.

An ar with a good dot and a light, doesn't get much better for self defense when it comes to long guns imo (for us normal people).

I still have an aimpoint pro. I leave it on, a couple (three maybe?) clicks down from high, and it's good in most any light like that, and the battery lasts for years. I think iirc I left it like that for four years and just went ahead and replaced the battery, but it was still working fine.

Lower budget around $50-$100, get a Bushnell TRS 25 or Primary Arms. $130ish budget, get a Vortex Crossfire or Sparc. Above that go with Aimpoint.

    Thanks good folks,
I'm a handgun guy and not much of a rifleman. I appreciate your replies. I'm on a fixed income so money is a factor. I did my research on red dots. I'm likin' the Vortex folks. Any thoughts on red dots less than $200? Thanks again, John

I have this one on my MP 15 Sport II and like it. Holosun HS403B Micro Red Dot Optic (2 MOA) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BJ3ZXD0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_wbrRDbJCRT2GB

Vortex is good. Bushnell TRS 25 is darn good for the price, under $100, just make sure you get a real one...Ebay is full of very close looking fakes. I know several guys who used them in 3 gun competitions and they held zero quite well. My work gun has a Vortex after the dept got refunds on all our Eotechs.

I have several of the Primary Arms micro dots that are about $170. The pushbutton one with 0.5 MOA adjustments, not the dial kind. I have these on different ARs and AKs and have never had a problem out of one, and they have a good track record. They're personally as low as I will go for a self defense rifle red dot.

Here is a number of decent red-dot optics for under $200. It would be hard to go wrong with any of these. You would still need to add a mount with some of these.

I recently got a Vortex Spitfire 1x Prism Scope.

I like that the reticle is etched in the glass so that it shows up all the time, at least in daylight or against a light background, and that the "dot" does not look distorted because of my astigmatism.

LPVO for anything with a 16" or better barrel is my rule of thumb. Pistol length? Red dot. As mentioned, 50 yards the red dot will be the winner.

For the usage you described I would be inclined to go with a red dot or similar 1X optic. If you do not want to spend Aimpoint or Eotech money take a look at some of the Holosun red dots. They have a couple different reticles and colors. I like their circle dot reticle which is somewhat Eotech type.
