I have had my Marlin 336 sitting around with a scope base on it. I am beginning to lean towards a red dot for the gun. It seems like a red dot with 2-4 MOA would be fine considering the 30-30 round. Is it bad form to put a red dot on top of a lever action rifle?

I have been looking at this new Vortex as opposed to a new scope.

it's a good idea, I have one on my .35 marlin and really like it. They make the gun very handy, as you are on target almost as soon as you shoulder the gun, and due to their size they aren't as cumbersome as a regular scope

Yeah, Red Dots are ugly but sometimes are needed.

I hate the Red Dot on this pretty Winchester but old eyes demand it.

I vote for doing it. I also have a 336 that I rescued, refinished, and plan to put a dot on.

    Blasphemy!

God will smite all of you down. Red dot on a lever gun. What is next? A bayonet on a pistol?

A very inexpensive Red Dot that you might try, to see if you like a Red Dot on the rifle, is this BSA.
    http://www.natchezss.com/Optics.cfm?contentID=productDetail&brand=OS&prodID=OSRD30&prodTitle=BSA 30mm Red Dot Sight 5 MOA

I have about two dozen of them on everything from 22 pistols to 12 ga shotguns. Over the years I've had a couple go bad but I've also had a couple high price Red Dots sights go bad.
For the price the sight really should not work good but it does.

Although I make it a point to never recommending anything, I just pass on my experience, good or bad, I like these BSA so well I just ordered 4 more.

They haven't changed the picture on the web site but they have made the sight look better.
This is what my 4 new ones look like.

That's pretty cool. If that was mine I would call it my Redneck Tacticool Rifle. Is that a .45-70 or a .30-30?

Yeah, I just kind of grew into them. I tried several brands in the past, including Aimpoint. Most were OK, but a few were crap.

I hate to swap sights between guns, so I'd have to keep buying new Red Dot sights as I bought a new gun. As these $30 BSA sights kept doing good I kept buying more. In the past I did get a couple with too weak a dot and the brightness adjustment needing work but mostly they just keep working, so I keep buying them. Until now, I've got them on everything.

The dot on these cheap sights is not as crisp as on the expensive sights, but it doesn't interfear with the accuracy much, if at all.
