I'm wanting to get a chronograph, and I don't know much at all about them. Just want to test subsonics out of different length barrels and see what effect that has. Mainly for .22 and 9mm. Fastest thing I have is .243, which I'm sure I'd check just for fun.

I don't reload, and have no plans to.

Also, do the $20 decibel meters on Amazon work?

Don’t know about the item on Amazon, but the $100 version of shooting Chrony works great for the average shooter. I’m guessing this is about as cheap as you can go and have any semblance of quality and reliability.

of course you can spend a lot more. For my use, it just isn’t necessary.

I've had my Chrony for 10+ years. Never had a problem with it other than muzzle blast causing false readings when I positioned it too close with my .308.

Was going to be my recommendation too, but with the Bluetooth digital link. Looks like the digital link accessory has been discontinued, but I found an upgraded model that has the Bluetooth built in so that would be my choice. It links to your phone or tablet via bluetooth and allows you to enter some data and save it all in one place.

Couple of screenshots from my digital link app.

I`ve only used PACT chrono`s. I`ve had very good luck with mine. I had the original one they came out with MANY years ago, ran perfect. Recently last year i upgraded to their new one. Love it. I got mine right though the PACT company. They were awesome to deal with. They offered to trade me up into their new one if i would trade in my original one. I did, and only paid $40 difference, and THEY paid the shipping both ways. It came with EVERYTHING... sensors, sky light shades, the sensor mount. For $40 freakin bucks!!!!

Midway sells the one i have.

I bought an inexpensive Chrony many years ago and it works fine still. Its very exact and the only real problem with it is the tubes can fall apart if your shooting a banger and the unit is to close to the barrel. Further their customer service is very good and Ive easily replaced components Ive lost or broke for a good price.

The chronys are okay, but I've had two and both were much more difficult to get good readings compared to the prochrono I replaced them with.
