i need recomendations for a motherboard. But unlike other people who want top of the line, i dont. I am going to build a computer for my mother. Right now she's useing a 600mhz p3 with 320mb of ram. its been around for at least 5 years now. She basically will use it to connect to the internet and edit photos that she takes with her digital camera so usb ports are a must. So what mb and cpu would you recommend?

I have built 3 computers now using the ASUS A7N8X boards. No problems and easy to work with. Used a AMD processor.

Socket A with a Sempron on a micro board with dual channel mem. Install a USB front plate on the tower for her camera. If you're going to buy a new case, I suggest the Antec Solutions case. Very nice for the $.

Is the 600mhz PIII insufficient? Perhaps just a bigger HD, a bit more RAM, and a USB2 card would breathe new life into it.

I've used the ASUS board mentioned above, excellent board. I've also used MSI boards with great success.

Just a quick glance at Newegg...

    MSI K8N Neo-V

    AMD Sempron 2600+

This should be more than enough, and won't break the bank either. The 8 USB ports are nice, you may need to buy a case with Frontside USB ports to take advantage of them. I prefer a cheap case I get at a local chop shop.

Works great, everything lines up well, etc. It's only 40 bucks with some junk power supply, which I always replace w/ an Antec.

    Good luck

yes it is. I checked to see if i could upgrade it with the manufacturer. It has the maximum amount of ram and the motherboard can only handle a p3 600mhz.
but you bring up a good point. i would also like the motherboard to be able to be upgraded at least some on down the road.
