Hi, fellas! Gonna be going on a lil' hike up in bear country, and would like to hear some suggestions of handguns that would be good at stopping a charging bear. Thanks! :wavey:

S&W Model 29 6" barrel. Of course something in .308 would be much better.

Either a 44mag with heavy cast bullets or a 454 Casull.

Nah, a 454 has a good deal more power and also fires a much larger and heavier bullet. :)

Bears are more afraid of you than you are of them.
If they have an avenue of escape, most will take it.

If you should find yourself the target of a "charging" bear, I
sure hope you brought along something bigger than a handgun.

The biggest baddest handgun caliber in the world is worthless if
    you can't hit the target.

You stand a far greater chance of hitting your target with a rifle
or a shotgun than a pistol. Especially, if you're pooping your pants
    at the same time.

A decent .44 mag should do the trick...

I rather have a 12 ga with magnum shells, but they can be hard to lug around on a hike. ;)

A 500 magnum hits like a 12 ga slug, if you can shoot it well.

What kind of bears? If you're talking black bears you could get away with a lot less. If grizz is on the menu I would consider 10mm with the heaviest hardcast I could find a minimum. (though I gues a 9mm is better than fingernails) Much better would be a .44 or, if you could handle it, even bigger. (.454/.460/.475/.500)

If you don't have access to a real bear caliber, and can shoot it, you might well be better off with one of the big cans of bear spray.

    I can see it now!

Here comes the charging 1500lb Grizzly, fire in his eyes, foaming at the
mouth and blood of his last victim still on his massive paws.

You hold up a can of Bear Spray and go Psst, Psst right in his face.

Take that you bad old bear.

Black Bear is smaller but very agressive if provoked and won't stop attacking until you are Dead.
Griz....very big bear, hard to stop but will lose interest and walk away.
In either case you should have at a minium .44 magnum with 300 gr case hardened rounds and you had better be able to double action your handgun accurately at a charging bruin as it may take all 6 rounds. Most of the time you won't even see Mr. Bear until its too late so make a lot of noise to warn Mr. or Mrs Bear that your in his/her AO. You may wish to carry some bear spray also. Hope its legal to pack heat where your hiking.

To those who responded honestly, my apologies. :embarassed:

This was actually a joke thread on my behalf- I just wanted to see how many "Aw, not this **** again!" and facepalms I could get out of you guys. :tongueout:

Because like someone already said, there does seem to be a lot handgun-bear threads lately...

    ETA- and I wouldn't bring a handgun to a bear-fight; I would bring a shotgun with slugs.

For black bear anything .41 Magnum and up will suffice. .44 Magnum w/ heavy, hardcast loads would be very good.

    For Brown/Grizley bear :eek:utahere:
