it's not even officially summer yet and i've already got 6 jobs lined up.

    1) a 40k$ kitchen.

    2) a 7k$ mantle/fireplace makeover.

    3) a 6k$ bathroom remodel.

    4) a 10k$ bedroom/master bath remodel.

    5) a 1k$ canopy camp bed.

    6) a 900$ custom camp kitchen cabinet.

but yeah we're in a recession and we're all hurting for money. lol

    Congrats.
My wife works in insurance industry and they've been on mandatory OT since last Aug. From personal observations here it seems the recession has been not bad here.

I've often thought the same thing. I live in South Jersey near Philadelphia, and the local malls and restaurants are filled to capacity on the weekends (and many weeknights). I wonder if people around here really have the money to spend, or if they are running themselves into the ground financially.

Many markets are doing very well, some are doing very poorly. It's bad for some folks but most Americans are doing just fine.

    +1

The software company I work for is doing better then ever. We are so busy it isn't funny. We hired about 2 dozen new developers that I know of (meaning in my office) last quarter. I'm sure other offices hired several as well.

My fiancée on the other hand isn't so lucky. She worked in accounting at a company that went bankrupt in November 2008. Shes been able to find some temporary accounting jobs and do seasonal tax work, but hasn't been able to find a permanent job. Companies just aren't hiring that many people, and when they do there are tons of applicants.

Beer - according to Warren Buffett its called the "Great Cocooning", and its the reason he owns Shaw flooring and Benjamin Moore paints.

In times of financial strife, even if people aren't directly affected, people have a tendency to fix up what they already have rather than buying new.

Home sales and new home construction are flat in these parts but the carpenters and remodeling folks are busy.

    Congrats on your work!

Out here in Seattle the malls are always packed...but that may just be from the Canadians coming down to shop...

My mom just had her kitchen redone which was @40k

I still see jobs being lost and homes being foreclosed. Some people do have money but the problem is that the gov allowed too many people to come into the US and there is not enough money for everyone.

the good/bad part is that after all these jobs are finished and behind me i'm looking at MAYBE a whopping 10-15k profit, all the other profits are going to my crew, tools, and shop expenses.

my guys have stuck by me through this last really thin winter and if this summer goes according to plan they're all going to make a hell of a bonus this season. i'm a real **** to work for but i'm willing to pay out (when i can) for a hard day's work and loyalty.

i don't know how this whole "recession" thing is going to play out overall but it's looking good for me and mine so far and i've got my fingers crossed for everybody else out there, especially my fellow sweaters in the blue collar fields. good luck fellas.

I was talking to a guy that has been in the remodeling business for 25 years. He says that now that the new home builders are not busy they are all in the remodeling business now and messing up his sales.

I doubt Beer is lucky, so much as fortunate and good at what he does.

.......and making the point that, as bad as this depression has been, not everyone is affected.

Oilfield took a dump domestically the day after O was elected. Overseas work picked up sharply.

Domestic work is picking back up again.

    It's getting better.

I believe things are settling out a bit. Some people move around, adjust, adopt. These are the people who thrive. Others mope around waiting for their old job to come back, or one in the same field. That doesn't always happen.
