For those that left the .45 ACP caliber - what were your reasons why and what caliber did you choose to adopt afterwards ?
I left the 44 special charter arms bulldog (my first handgun) to a 357 magnum ruger speed six for greater ammo capacity ans left the 357 magnum to go to a 45 ACP lightweight Commander for more ammo capacity, faster reloads, and less muzzle blast indoors for home defense.

Then I partly left the 45 ACP as a carry gun, for a Glock 23 for greater lighter weight, greater ammo capacity but similar ballistics and chambered in another caliber that began with the number 4

It's a 45 auto Fred, 800-850 fps. You think 1-2 of those on the centerline poses a greater risk of 'serious overpenetration' than a barrage of of 9mm directed sorta center mass?

Don't fret, pal. I've 'studied gunfights' and have a pretty good idea of what to expect.
Well I have yet to find factory ball going less than 830fps. I dont think I ever claimed anything about risk of of one over the other. I like the 9mm because it works with a good jhp. 45 ball fails a lot, why would anyone use it unless forced to? Are you claiming 45 ball is as effective as a good 9mmj hp?

These 9mm evangelists are really something. They keep contradicting their own bs. First they say how 9mm is superior because accuracy is all that matters, but then in the same sentence they're praising high capacity of their 9mm pistols.
Why even need those 17-20 rds if you're such good at accuracy? So they basically defend pay n spray technique by praising 9mm pistols' capacity. I bet every 1911 owner is more proficient with their 7+1 rds of .45, than most of 9mm owners with their tacticool silenced, lasered 17-20 rds and 4 spare magazines.

They are so insecured in their own caliber choice, they contradict their own statements. Lol
Find one thread that praises that. Now you are just BSing.

I've never totally left the .45 ACP. I still carry my Glock G36 fairly regularly and use a .45 for home defense during the winter months (I like the bigger, heavier bullet to defeat thick clothing).
But I usually carry a Shield 9 or G19. And my usual house gun(s) are the G19 and Canik TP9SF.
I remain unconvinced that the average 9mm bullet is as incapacitating as the average .45 bullet. If I were sitting at a table and someone said, "In 5 seconds, an armed terrorist is going to burst into this room. On the table in front of you, there is a 9mm and a .45, both the same make and sized gun, relatively speaking, with only one round, which is in the chamber. You can only use one gun. What are you choosing?"
It would be the .45 ACP every time.
But ...
But when you can carry 8-15 rounds of 9mm in a pretty tidy package, with less recoil, for less cost (more practice!), I'll go with the 9mm.

I wonder how many posters on this thread have ever been in a actual gun fight , that said you think the vitriol would be toned down?
No gunfight but I should have capped the crazy lady trying to stab me with my duty 1911.
Tone down vitriol on a gun forum?? You are new here.

Nothing says FU to a bad guy like a 230gn hardball. So, no. Still my favorite caliber.

.357 magnum is a close second.

Since 75%+ of LEO & maybe 99% of ccw haven't, almost none here. Forums are a place to share opinions. How one gets to their opinion is the point though.

Leave the 45?? No way. My last purchase was a bargain basement priced Glock 37. I treat is as my 45+p using common store bought ammo. No extra effort on my part.

You are a bit contradicting. Since none of us know what our fight will be, then why not carry the 45 if you believe in it so strongly? I used to back in the day of crappy jhp. I would hunt jackrabbits with a 9mm & 90gr jhp or sp but never trusted those tiny expanding bullets to drop people. Today though, I am just fine with any service caliber with decent ammo. If stuck with solids, then I would go back to the 45 for edc.

Yeah, I guess it’s a little contradictory. I do think the .45 ACP is superior but not by much. The problem is that carrying a .45 in a similarly sized gun obviously chops the capacity at least in half. Example: my Glock G36 .45 and G19 9mm can usually use the same holster. G36 = 6+1. G19 = 15+1. Now I’m fairly confident in my shooting abilities and statistics would dictate one magazine is enough probably 95% of the time. But sometimes it’s a confidence booster knowing I have 16 rounds just in case I need’em.
It’s why I’m not a caliber snob; handgun rounds certainly aren’t death rays. They’re all ok, none of them other than maybe a .357 Magnum are exactly Bad Guy Anchors.

Even the mighty 357mag has failed. Jhp expansion doesnt happen for 2-3” so there is a slight edge To a bullet that starts at 45cal, but after that, 60-65cal is just that, regardless of where it starts. The resulting holes will be nearly identical, very slightly larger entry.

I left 45 for 40 back in ‘02. I don’t regret that decision whatsoever. But I have drifted back into using 45 again since late 2021.

I was a 9mm guy by policy, now retired I can carry anything I want. With that said I will play with my G30 as I like the gun and the caliber. I have seen tons of people shot with just about anything you can think off in my 38 years of LE service. Being a gun guy i was always interested in how the different calibers work, as been said before it’s were you put the rounds that count.
