For those that left the .45 ACP caliber - what were your reasons why and what caliber did you choose to adopt afterwards ?
.40 is really the modern update on .45.

More capacity
Almost as good expansion
Better penetration (the most important factor.)

I’ve actually moved to 9mm, because I have a 9mm that I shoot better than any other pistol I own (Beretta APX). But the .40 is a fantastic round.

I left the .45 because of my life experiences. I seen that they most certainly do not all fall to hardball. I seen what a properly placed 9mm will do. I learned that the definition of firepower is capacity, not caliber. I'll take 15 rounds of 9mm any day over 7 rounds of .45 just like I'll take 30 rounds of 5.56 over 20 .308. Arguing over caliber is one of the most stupid past times.

.40

All the power of 45, better capacity and pistol selection for CCW. My 1911's still have their place, and still see carry duty when I desire an extra safe, extra accurate CCW.

I have a 9mm for IDPA ESP. But I refuse to accept that 9mm is just as good as more powerful rounds. Barriers are a real thing. I find that 40 and 45 cycle more reliably as well. But I only have issues with FMJ. But then again, my reloads are FMJ. Only the mag in my CCW gets JHP. I shoot my wet, salty, oily, CCW ammo every month. All JHP would get expensive fast.

I have been carrying .45, everywhere, for a long time.

Lately I've been rethinking my carry options, and it's looking like this:

Around the farm, a G40 (10mm) or a 6" S&W 686 (.357 magnum), in a chest holster. My encounters tend here to be with four-legged critters, and prefer to maintain a good distance, when possible. The .45, I'm finding, doesn't have the best trajectory for anything over 10 yards.

When going to town, in the summer, when clothing is light, I'll switch to my 9mm Kahr P9. It's a single stack, but I shoot pretty well with it. Plus one extra mag.

In town, in all other seasons, I'm probably going to continue carrying .45, in a Walther PPQ, with one extra mag. We'll see.

Cost, and 40.
My EDC pistols used to be all 45s, now they are all 40. That being said, I plan to add an Officers model 1911 in 45 to the stable very soon, and if Glock ever makes a true G19 sized 45, I just might have all 45s as EDC again.
I will still own several G23s tho. I like them too much to ever dump them.

I realized how much I appreciated the thin width of a weapon for CCW. I simplified my life in a number of ways, one of which was to consolidate the number of guns and calibers I own. The 45 may be superior to 9 but not enough to matter for me given my size requirement.

9mm vs .45acp- The Riddle of Lead?

Because "handgun stopping power" really comes from penetration and shot placement,
the caliber that gives you the best accuracy under combat conditions (not standing flat-footed on the range) and the most chances to make a critical hit before having to reload under the stress of combat and/or injury is the best choice in my opinion.

Many officers end up shooting one handed because of the need to move quickly, holding an object, injury, or struggling with an offender. I would suggest shooting your defensive pistols strong and weak hand only and compare your accuracy and speed between the service calibers. Are you better with a 9mm under those conditions? I often see You Tube videos of people with .45acp and .40s&w pistols where they are constantly adjusting their weak hand support grip after a shot or two. This is on a range with no stress. I think that the pistol's recoil is too much for them and they would be better off with the 9mm.
