I was just looking aroud the member section and I wondered why I joined i could not use a particlur name. Well it was taken.
so i checked to see if it was still used, and someone has it. But i dont think it is an active user. Four posts in 2 yrs and the search for his last post yields none found. That tells me it has been a while.

So my question is what is the posibilty of going thru and dumping the
the non used user names, say if they are inactive for a year.

But what if that person is a soldier stationed overseas and can't access the website either for technological or free time issues? I'd say something on the order of 3 years of inactivity. I know I was inactive (here) for about 2 years before and after the birth of my son.

Some of those people, while they may choose not to post for whatever reason, probably do have user names for the times when they have a question that can't be answered by a search. My guess is, the member has been here more than just the 4x he posted, even if he chooses not to cookie the site, and searches as a guest... This site has so much info, on many things other than guns, and members with such vast interests/talents, its often the first place I turn when I've got an oddballl question(Note my thread in the Flight Deck the other day)..

The computer age is to a point that ALL countries have accessibility.
So I don't think being stationed over seas is a viable answer.
I have accessed this site from the middle east with no problem.

Also if a person only posts "4x's" so be it. The amount of times a person post's is not the issue.
It is the "I'll register for this site and never return issue."
I'm no computer expert but there must be a way to track unused names.
Also if a person is stationed overseas they will have use of a computer. I did.

suppose we did that, and gabeodog hadn't been used in a few years.

how would I know which gabeodog i am responding to? you could be someone new or someone I haven't seen in a while.

maybe the old gabeodog slept with my wife and ran off to mexico with the kids. now wouldn't that put you and me in an awkward situation?

    Who cares
It's just a name and why loose some good ones due to non-use.

If you only know the screen name of the person who slept with your wife
and took you kids to Mexico, then there is a reason they're gone.
You spend to much time on the computer, and believe too deeply that cyber space is a reality, and screen names associated with each person are who they are.

Trust me give the wife some flowers, Learn Spanish and call the kids.
Most of all let them know your not going to be online as much.
    Next.

I don't think this is a good idea, I have been a member for a couple of years and probally only have 4 or 5 entries. I mainly use the site to learn more and do not post unless I feel I can truly add to the discussion. Please do not take my name away just because you post more than I! ;)

Damnyankee, Next time you browse this thread read all of the posts.
    It should answer your concern.
Damnyankee is a cool user ID. Be thankfull you were'nt forced to use something like 897qkl because the good names were wasted on the MIA's.
Even DMV re-absorbs personal Lic plates and gives them out to someone else, if not used for some time.

P.S. Damnyankee. You have 13 posts not 4 or 5.

i think it would be a good idea to reabsorb inactive names. but the problem is decided how lond before you do so. yea some people might not like it but no one ever likes all the rules. you have to have a comprimise of some sort so many post within a time frame to stay active or you have to reregister. it's not like its hard to do or anything

Look guys, I've never seen any need to recycle old user names and I do not intend to do so. I already have enough on my plate without coming up with new demands on my time. The old names are not taking up much space or hurting anyone and trying to sort out who may be using what name is a headache I don't need. There are still plenty of good names available. In fact, I am continually surprised by some of the creative names that some people come up with. Anyway, I appriciate everyone's input on this. Eric
