Reading JimBianchi's thread about TBI, really hit me about how stuff done long ago will sneak up on you in old age.
I work at high altitude and have to pass a physical yearly.
This year, my Physician heard something in my lungs he didn't like so he sent me for a chest x-ray.
It's not good when your Physician calls you back a day later and says we need to have a discussion.
Showed me the x-ray and sent me back for a CAT scan.
It revealed clearly that I'm coming down with Pulmonary Fibrosis, my lungs are being scarred up by all the sh*t I inhaled in my life-long career as a Machinist and Weldor.
I'm losing lung function and aerobic capacity.
What I thought was old age sneaking up on me was this condition, was beginning to notice it was getting harder to do heavy work and lifting, anything aerobic left me short of breath and I'd get tired sooner.
Also noticed riding my bicycle uphill on my commute was getting hard and I'd have to stop and rest sometimes.
Was referred to a Specialist and he handed me a 3 page questionaire and told me to check off all of the substances I had been exposed to or worked with.
Not to good when you check off 75% of what was on that list!
I was advised to quit working at high altitude due to this condition.
Nice part of the saga is that my employer got me on FMLA and I can use up all my sick leave until I retire in May 2020.
Also looking into getting me LTDI and Workman's comp plus SSDI.
I was planning to work bit more but this condition popped up and I have an early-out of working.

    Trully, getting old sucks!

I'm glad your employer is trying to help you out. Too many would just part ways

Yep. The company I'm with now, has been very good to me. They've kept me on the books, so I can keep the health insurance. I'm getting LTDI, so I'm ok there. I'm going to Mayo Scottsdale next week to start the neurological testing the FAA wants. It's on the insurance. Other places I've worked in the past, would have cut me loose right after my accident.

Keep your head up, and be optimistic about the health you do have.

That sucks, but you're still riding a bicycle in high country to travel places. You've got a lot of people beat. Don't let this be an excuse to throw in the towel. The human body is resilient.

    Prayers sent. Sorry to hear.

I'm dealing with my own issues, like the many of us, but I'm just too boneheaded to seek medical care. These actions, or better yet, inactions will seal my fate. I pray no one else is like me and that they get competent medical care.

I grew up working for the family company. My grandmother used to tell me “Don’t do that. You’ll pay for it when you’re older”. She was right. Old, even childhood injuries are slowly crippling me now.

Does the scarring continue, once you identify and stay away from the source?

In other words, does it stay the same as is now, or somehow get worse? Hopefully some treatment available to you to slow or stop the effects.

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully it's not progressive.
