A new member posted about an issue which no one can dispute does create problems. Here is our exchange:
    This is that thread.

It will be closed until I can address some of FinallyGlock's points.

The civility level in RI has risen dramatically in the last week. I thank all of you for that.

Besides civility, interjecting opposing opinion just for the sake of disrupting threads with specific topics is a real problem as well. At least one person here has said as much. When one person jumps in, others follow. The threads often go off topic in one or more new directions.

Parties on all sides are guilty of these hijackings.

    What is the solution?

Along the same line as above, are these reasons shared by others of you. I've edited his post into bullet points.

I don't believe it will come to that. More on this later.

As I said earlier, we are working on civility. You make another important point: "...I said, saw myself behaving badly and took a break..."

That was a good move. If more people did that, life would be more pleasant.

"But this one was just too over the top for me, had to speak politely and call out what I saw as yet another attack on Christians by generalizing..."

Understandable, and it, "generalizing", happens on all sides.

Behavior is important. Banning members who are really good contributors when only their manners suck is not always best. And, it isn't always that one member's fault...

These days, we'll give someone a chance to change their ways, maybe even two. Hopefully, that's all it takes. If not, yeah, they will be banned.

Back to the original topic... Do we need a way for members holding specific beliefs to have a discussion without opposing beliefs challenging them ALL the time?

Another forum I visit has a sub-forum specifically for their Christian members to discuss the Bible etc. I will sometimes view some of those threads but I don't participate in that sub-forum However that forum is much smaller than here...perhaps a sub-forum by invitation only?

Offhand, I'd say no. I don't think it's necessary if threads could remain on topic (case in point this most recent one where it's now turned into a science v. religion discussion).

My initial thought on what I think you are proposing, is that you'd end up going down a path of a zillion sub-religion forums. Gotta have a forum for Southern Baptists to debate Independent Baptists. Gotta have a thread for the Calvinists to debate internally (cuz thats what we do). Gotta have a thread for the conservative Presbyterians to go after the liberal Presbyterians (that can't be in the Calvinist forum because liberal Presbyterians aren't Calvinists anymore).

Maybe not the best plan for a Glock forum.

The key may be staying on topic and enforcing it. And like you said, behavior matters. Whether than results in a self-imposed temporary or permanent leave-of-absence, moderator bans from individual sub-forums for a time, etc. I don't know that I have an opinion on what form that takes.

So I've only been here a few weeks now, you are saying that what I've seen (and participated in) in the last couple of weeks to a month is drastically MORE aggressive and animated than is typical for GT RI ?

Before last Wednesday at 10:29 PM when I posted "Everyone, Please Read - When the Religious Issues forum was created it came with this description...", behavior had reached a pretty overwhelming level. Since then, members behavior has been very acceptable.

And that's the quandary. How do you enforce off-topic tangents?

Therein lies the problem. I've only been here a few months but every single topic devolves into Team Atheist versus Team Theist "You prove God exists, no YOU prove He doesn't!"

We have tools: Thread response bans, temporary and permanent; Sub-forum bans, temporary and permanent; GT bans, temporary and permanent.

Can you ban from specific forums? Sometimes people post in RI to discuss RI; not to have an atheist tell them they are foolish, crazy, ignorant, etc. Some people just like to pee in the sandbox others are using. Just a thought.

I definitely think there needs to be a theist only, maybe even a Xian only sub forum where believers can discuss issues and their faith without outside influence.

Yea, but then what do you do when a Baptist decides to pee in a Calvinist thread. Or the opposite. The thick plottens!

You'd think the religious crowd could behave, but we can't. We are not perfect either, regardless of what we might think.

Here here. That said, a certain degree of thick skin needs developing when you are dealing with people, who quite frankly, find your beliefs to be ridiculous. I'm a Satanist, and I expect certain people to find my beliefs to be silly or evil or both. Comes with the territory.

That I don't know. Having said that, I find you to be one of the better examples of your faith. Kudos.
