I set the gun on a black background hoping the camera's would meter in a way bringing out the color case hardening. I darkened the image a bit too much trying to blacken the background but overall the lighting doesn't seem too bad. I made all the color and lighting adjustments in RAW then converted it to JPG. Does that make a difference?

I like the picture, but I think I would prefer the black background without the reddish cast. I would also prefer to pull the light up a little on the metal part of the gun and also sharpen that part just a bit. I hope you don't mind I took the liberty of playing with it for a minute. I don't have a calibrated monitor in front of me (I am on the road and doing it on my laptop), but you get the idea:

It is too warm and brown looking. hywhobo's tone is much better and more realistic.

Working in RAW then saving the FINAL image in JPEG is right. Also, I never ever ever alter my original file. I always save any changes I make separately.

Very cool. I was trying to use the color to hide my fingerprint smudges. I do tend to fondle that revolver a lot!
