My 799 in 7.62x39 arrived yesterday. Man was that thing gobbed up with grease! It took me about 4 hours to get it clean. I got the scope bases put on last night and then mounted the scope this morning and took it to the range. I bore sighted it at 50 yards and fired a few rounds through it to loosen up the action and get it grouping under 3". Out of the box the action was very stiff and rough. But much to my delight after about 20 rounds not only did the action loosen up and smooth out, so did the trigger. Once I moved out to 100 yards and readjusted the scope, my groups quickly went from 3.5" to around 1.25". Here was my best 3-shot group at 100 yards:

I think with handloads and .311 bullets, this could easily be a sub MOA rifle.

As much as folks crack on AK accuracy, the Short Ruskie isn't replete with the best ammo quality compared to most other rounds.
Not to say AK's are MOA guns, but with good ammo, they can do decently.

It's even more interesting to see what this round does from typical bolt rifles, thanks for the report.

    Keep us updated.

Just curious, why 7.62x39 over .22-250 or something like that?

While I have not shot for groups, My 20'' HBAR 7.62X39 upper can ring the gongs from 300-500 yards, and this is with Russian monarch

    Not doubting you, but, really?

The availability of x39 and variety of platforms make it an attractive "just one caliber" round. I didn't realize it was effective that far out. If you try for groups I'd be interested to hear how that goes.

    1. The novelty of having a bolt action in this caliber.
    2. I don't reload and this ammo is about $6.00 a box, so an afternoon of shooting targets at the range doesn't cost me an arm and a leg.
    3. If I do decide to deer hunt with this gun, I'm more comfortable doing it with a .30 cal bullet than with .22 cal bullet.

Try five, 5 shot groups, and report back.

I've got the same rifle but under the Charles Daly line I bought 5 or 6 years ago.

I bought it after I got in a bad car accident and couldn't shoot my 300savage without throwing up.

Trigger and action really smooth up with use.

If I take my time and let the barrel cool I can put a 20rd box of Wolf into a 2inch group @ 100yds.

I haven't shot that rifle in over 2 years, but took it out last week.

It was cold, rainy and windy as hell. Shot 10rds at the 100yd 4in gong off hand. 10 for 10.

Shot another 10rds with my SMLE at the large 12in gong. 10 for 10.

Made some coffee and went home. Was a good morning.

You may be interested to know that Hornady just introduced a new load with their V-Max bullet in this caliber...

For a good short-range deer load in .762x39, try the Prvi Partisan 125 grain soft nosed roundnose.

It's not what you'd call a high BC, but it makes one hellaciously effective wound on deer-sized game.

It would be sweet if Remington or CZ were to make one that can take AK mag.
