Is this really needed or should I dump it?
You don't necessarily need QuickTime (then again there are a lot of things on a computer you probably don't need). But if you ever want to play a movie that is in the QuickTime format, you won't be able to (unless you had another program that did allow that format).
If you ever plan to visit Apple's Movie Trailer site, or any other movie/trailer site to watch high quality online video, you'll need it. I'm also guessing that it doesn't take up much space. Don't throw it away. You'll hate to have to re-install it later.
Anyone know of a GOOD player that will play QT files and such?
I'm not a fan of Apple's QT player.
Look for a program called Quicktime Alternative. It will play Quicktime files in a simple "classic" version of Windows Media Player. There's also one called Real Alternative, which is vastly better than the "official" bloated, spyware-laden player from Real Networks.
I like WinAmp myself.
Ooops, just remembered Winamp wont play .MOV files. Nevermind.
Halo's right. Go here and get the Quicktime and Real alternatives.
