So I went today for semi annual visit to the same dentist I have had for over 10 years: They normally take 4 x-rays. (Sometimes they skip it.)
Today the hygienist want to take a "complete set." The thingie they put in my mouth is always painful. Today, after 3 x-rays I asked how many she planned. "Eighteen" she said.

"No we are done now" was my comment. "Just let me take the wings like usual." So four more x-rays.

Is this standard practice? I don't remember anything like this before.

Also..the dentist didn't actually examine me-he just consulted with the hygienist and then scheduled what she found. (Today 2 cavities.) That's new too. I bet he billed my insurance for a dental exam.)

    Is this modern dentistry?

Dalton Wayne didn't need no stinkin' x-rays. Just a good pair of vice-grips.

Our x-ray thingies don't hurt and I can talk to the dentist if I want, but hygienists do most of the work now. And I'm self-employed, so I actually pay for dental care.

I ask my hygienist if they have the bacon or burbon flavored x-ray thingies.

They take X-rays based on your insurances schedule and what they will get paid for whether they need to or not.

They're gonna do whatever they get paid the most for. Whether you pay it or insurance pays it.

I could swear last time I had dental xray it was one of those circular things that moved all the way around my head and it was a one shot deal. You guys must have some backwoods hillbilly dentists.

No offense meant to backwoods hillbillies.

No-you have a cutting edge one. High priced specialists have those but not family dentists.

My dentist does x-rays and cleaning himself. His daughter is also a dentist in the office. His wife is a nuclear physicist, but she helps by cleaning the office.

Once a year they do the wraparound x-ray. I think they call it a Panoramic. All the teeth plus upper and lower jaws.

That's about my limit. When I was having other Xray stuff done on my body I told the dentist to hold off until the next year. I agree that it seems insurance coverage has a lot to do with what tests etc. are recommended.

Don't get me started on x-rays......................my dentist can't even see the need for a root canal after taking them. Two miserable months.
