In Full Metal Jacket, the barracks in basic training....... are they the real MC barracks? If so, PI or Hollywood?

The movie was filmed in England.

They look very similar to the ones at MCRD. It is a basic design used all over the world I think.

Hmph. Always thought that was MCRD PI. Some scenes backed up that idea; guess I was wrong.

At MCRD boot camp in that era, we lived in small Quonset huts, not barracks. There were about 20 recruits to a hut.

At MCRD San Diego during that time (Feb. 1966) we lived in Quonset huts along the left side of the parade grounds with about 20 to a hut, but not real sure about the amount of recruits to a hut.

No barracks for recruits at that time but the depiction of the D.I. by R. Lee Irmy was spot on. Should have been as he actually WAS a D.I. before he was medically retired from the Corps. He was actually hired to be an expert advisor and he was so liked by the director (Stanley Kubrick) , he put him in the movie.

I was there in 83. The last of the huts (west of the theatre) were being used for storage. They are all gone now.

The Squad Bay I was in looked very much like the one in the movie, and it does look like it was at P.I. Although filmed in the UK, it was well done.

There were some quonset huts at MCRD SD in 87 when I went through. Some were used for classes and religious services for other denoms. The ones at Pendleton during field training, well, they were full of CS gas, lol.

The airport is the most depressing part of MCRD San Diego. When you are in the sand pit doing mountain climbers and you look up and see a plane taking off you just think "Man, I wish I was on there."

I was there in 99, and there were still Quonset huts by the O-course being used for storage.

Oddly, we have a bunch at CERN too.

There were also huts being used as barracks at Tallega as late as 2002 when I transitioned to the Javelin.

Kind of like going out to formation after chow at Edson range, seeing all those cars on the freeway going by... just thinking "man, those people are free, it's SO close". Good times.

They may not have been real, but the actual bay they lived in was nearly identical to the one I had in basic in the Army (1983), even as to where the doors, latrine, etc. were located.

Barracks today are still mostly open bay for basic training. The main difference is the outside of the building and, at some point while I was out, the Army quit cleaning and shining things to the standard we had in the 80's. Now it's more sweep and mop. With downsizing, however, I think polished floors will return.
